About Jits Bakker (1937–2014)
Jits Bakker was a versatile Dutch artist: sculptor, painter, watercolorist, drawer, glass artist, silversmith, and graphic artist. He refused to be confined by one discipline and explored universal themes through timeless and expressive visual language. Inspired by the Renaissance ideal of the well-rounded human, Bakker developed a rich and diverse body of work. For over fifty years, he worked from his studio 'De Kooi' in De Bilt. His sculptures and artworks are featured in museums and private collections around the world. Throughout his career, he received prestigious commissions and met many world leaders and notable public figures. Jits Bakker's legacy continues to inspire through his powerful and emotionally resonant art that bridges cultures and generations.

Jits Bakker (1937–2014) was a Dutch visual artist deeply inspired by classical mythology and Renaissance ideals. Though best known internationally as a sculptor, his artistic talents spanned a wide range of disciplines including painting, drawing, watercolor, glass art, graphic techniques, and jewelry design. Bakker began his career as a painter rooted in Impressionism but later developed a bold Expressionist style influenced by Fauvism. He was passionate about plein air painting, capturing landscapes with emotional intensity and vibrant color. His diverse body of work reflects a deep connection to nature, personal experience, and classical themes. In 1962, he began working with glass mosaics, drawn to the interplay of color and light, and he remained active in this medium throughout his life. He also saw his jewelry as miniature sculptures and treated each piece with the same artistic integrity as his larger works. Bakker embodied the Renaissance principle of the "universal man," constantly exploring new creative fields and rejecting the idea of artistic specialization. His life’s work is a testament to versatility, craftsmanship, and timeless expression. He studied at ArtEZ in Arnhem and held numerous exhibitions across Europe and the U.S., with permanent installations and high-profile commissions, including for royalty and international institutions.

Mackaay works with recognizable shape:: women, men and animals, with a pointer at the primal form. Archetypal motives like warriors, women, horses, archers, lovecouples, created with his own signature. An example of this work is the wellknown ‘Gouden Kalf’, the big prize of the ‘Nederlands Film Festival’, designed in 1980 by Mackaay, commissioned by Jos Stelling, filmdirector and initiator of the festival.
There has been big developments in his work after the calf, but the basic forms are still to be found in his work. The renewal in his work has been a internal fight, between the two sides of his brain. The wild artist animal and the changed, peaceful, contemplative sculptor. The last one won! Not only did he change as a human being, his work changed with him. Big, tough, expressionist bronzes and stone statues whith the woman and animal as favourite subject, changed in touching, intimate bronze sculptures.

Dutch artist Frans van Straaten (1963) should be called an artist of balance always searching for harmony between force and movement in combination with space. Because of the wide range in his art-education he has mastered the art of drawing, painting and sculpting technology. However, the classical plastic art of sculpture and modelling opens up the possibility for him to create his own language of sculpture in answer to his urge for art. Due to this style of sculpting, the preference for bronze is natural.
After his study of sculpture at the Academy of Art in Rotterdam (1988), Frans van Straaten creates bronze sculptures in which he unites force and movement. Feeling and Emotion converted into Matter Sculpture is an experience of space combined with the challenge of the three-dimensional. The tension of space and movement are the themes, which Frans expresses in his sculptures. Summary it can be said that the power of life and being, the feeling and emotion by force and movement will be converted into matter. The experience of space is being expressed in the shapes and characters in each of Frans’ sculptures. His sculptures of bulls express explosive power while the horses find their strength in being elegant. Each sculpture recalls this way their own association and serves as a metaphor for a certain emotion. Feelings, which has inspired the artist for each sculpture.
