John McKinnon
“Mother and Child” Biomorphic Modern Abstract Sculpture of Embracing Figures

1980s

About the Item

Biomorphic abstract sculpture by Canadian artist John McKinnon. The work features a mother figure holding her child in a loving embrace. Inspired by other modern artists such as Henry Moore and Constantin Brancusi who explored the abstraction of the human form. Artist Biography: John Walter McKinnon was born in 1949 in Nelson, B.C. It was there that he learned about the various stones that he uses: marble, alabaster, and steatite. John carefully quarries and chooses each stone suitable for his pieces. He was artist-in-residence at the Kootenay School of Art in the years before the school’s demise. John’s work can be found in private collections across Canada and the United States, and as far as Australia and Germany. He has also completed major commissions for corporations and municipalities in Canada. Although John is best known for his stone sculpture, he has worked extensively in bronze as well as silkscreen printing.
