Hybrid Architectural Figurative Bust in Black Cement. Anthropotectura “LarA 011”
Located in FISTERRA, ES
“LarA 011” is a unique architectural sculpture from the Antropotectura series by Spanish artist José Perozo. Cast in black pigmented cement, this head-and-shoulders bust presents a fusion of the human figure with modular architectural volumes. The vertical extension of block-like forms emerges from the cranial area, transforming the head into a structural topography. This hybrid configuration invites reflection on the human body as both inhabited and inhabiting — a site of memory, construction, and symbolic permanence. The formal arrangement of the sculpture is symmetrical but discontinuous, with geometric protrusions interrupting the organic contours of the face. These elements suggest urban formations, perhaps ruins or unfinished constructions, anchored to the surface of the skin. This layered structure evokes the aesthetic of posthuman figuration and resonates with speculative architectural languages often seen in anime environments — particularly those of Studio Ghibli or early cybernetic landscapes. The matte black surface finish accentuates the raw tactility of the material. Subtle tonal variations, occasional air pockets, and manual traces from the casting process are preserved, underscoring the artist’s interest in the sculptural language of construction materials. These choices align with the conceptual underpinning of Antropotectura, a term coined by Perozo to describe his ongoing investigation into the convergence of embodiment and architecture. About the Artist: José Perozo (Vigo, 1978) is a Spanish sculptor with a background in Scenic Construction and Fine Arts. His practice explores how built structures can be inscribed onto the human form, merging classical figuration with a contemporary sculptural grammar. The LarA series has been exhibited in institutional and independent contexts and is currently represented by Casa das Peritas. About Casa das Peritas: This work is presented by Casa das Peritas, an independent art space located in Galicia’s Atlantic coast, working with international collectors, designers, and institutions. Known for its curated selection of contemporary figurative and conceptual works, the gallery combines rural precision with global outreach. New York City. The artist creating the original sculpture is pictured in the 1939 Sculptors Guild catalogue in the attached photos. The original was carved from Pink Tennessee marble. The reduced stone cast, offered on 1stDibs, was created in the following years by the esteemed Robinson Galleries, which created reproductions of sculptures. Officially Frances Dorothy Epping is born in 1910, in Providence, Rhode Island USA. In 1913 John C Epping, a successful motion picture executive who had hired the child’s mother as a housemaid, adopted the little girl and on her legal papers he changed the place of her birth to providence, Rhode Island. Her real name is Christina Roselyn Mutchler and she was born on June 27, 1910, at Alhambra, California and died on February 20, 1983 in Lenox, Massachusetts. She had quite a life and in the beginning her father by adoption shuffled her around from home to home, from Catskills, New York, in to an Alhambra convent and even in Germany. She finished her secondary education in Los Angeles and was finally reunited with her original family. Frederick J. Mutchler and Christina Roselyn Lucas (born Wesseler) were her real parents; (?) Frederick was born on June 26, 1883, in New York and her mother Christina was born on July 24, 1892, in Cologne, Germany. Frances Dorothy Epping’s had a good but varied art education. Her education included the Otis art institute, (An avant-garde art school established in 1918 in Los Angeles) and then the Royal Bavarian Academy in Munich. Because she was a woman, she sometimes listened and followed to the lectures from the hallway. Although all these obstacles this strong women holds up against a mainly male dominated world of fine art sculpture. She studied in Munich under Josef Wackerle...
