About the Item

"Astrid", layered laser cut aluminum and enamel on aluminum panels — 35 x 42 x 8 inches. Edition of 18 which are sold out. There are two artist proofs available and then the edition is sold out and unavailable. Kalish Editions explores a novel approach to the nude figure in this incredibly dimensional artwork. From the side, this wall sculpture becomes abstracted as you look through multiple layers of laser cut aluminum. From the front, the layers come together to create a reclining, nude figure, based upon a sketch by the artist, who playfully places her in front of a piece of lined paper as if torn out from his sketchbook. Michael Kalish is an internationally acclaimed mixed-media artist based in Los Angeles. His passion for metal started with vintage car parts and license plates and evolved to more refined laser cut aluminum and mirrored stainless steel sculptures, with references to American culture. In his most daring and bold expression of the force of nature known as love, the renowned sculptor unveiled his own artistic sonnet in sculpture form – "THE ART OF FINDING LOVE", a 20 foot x 6 foot x 6 foot interactive sculpture in February 2017. Kalish has designed the contemporary piece so that the viewer must find the exact vantage point where the sculpture is no longer abstract and "Love" literally comes into focus. A series of these large-scale public monuments has traveled across the United States since 2017. Michael Kalish has completed several large-scale public installations for which he is well known, including “reALIze”, a large-scale multi-dimensional Muhammad Ali sculpture in downtown Los Angeles. The monument is larger than life, as is Ali’s legacy: an appropriate testament to the essence for the legend the world has come to know, simply, as “The Greatest.” The breath-taking effect is an enormous, 360-degree, two-story structure composed of five miles of stainless steel cables, two miles of aluminum tubing, and 1,300 boxing speed bags. Like Kalish's other works, large and small, "reALIze" comes into focus from one vantage point challenging the viewer to find the subject.
