About the Item

Large alabaster sculpture depicting the Satyr with cymbals, 19th-century Volterra workshop. The satyr with cymbals is a Roman marble sculpture preserved in the Uffizi Museum in Florence. The sculpture depicts a satyr caught in a lively dance step, beating time with a foot castanet (Greek: kroupezeion). The ancient part of the sculpture comprises the body including the base, while the head and arms are due to a 16th-century addition. This splendid marble belonged to the collection of Roman prelate Eurialo Silvestri. Passing briefly from Villa Giulia, the marble was then purchased by the Medici as early as the late 16th century, and then taken to Florence in the early 17th century . In the last years of that century he finally made his entrance into the Tribune to be welcomed into the roster of the most celebrated sculptures in the grand ducal collection. The group was widely copied in imperial times for use in the decoration of suburban villas and luxury residences. In the Grand Tour era it became one of the most successful sculptures, widely replicated in bronze. Few marble or alabaster replicas, however; this one in particular can be attributed to Volterra workshops, made from the area's prized alabaster. Very good condition, free of restoration.
