The latest piece in the series of Shadow Dancers by Will Budgett, Ophelia is an experiment in how abstract a form can become while still casting recognisable shadows. At first glance, the central bronze sculpture appears chaotic and fragmented, but when illuminated, it reveals the silhouettes of two dancers mid-motion — elegant, expressive, and full of life. By playing with light, texture, and negative space, Budgett transforms solid metal into a delicate performance, blurring the line between sculpture and storytelling. Ophelia invites the viewer to look beyond the obvious, to find grace in distortion, and movement in stillness.
Artist Biography:
Will Budgett's work delves into the dynamic interplay between light and shadow. His abstract sculptures, when illuminated by multiple lights, cast shadows that reveal recognizable forms, creating a striking contrast. The raw, brutal nature of his sculptures is softened by the graceful, fluid shadows they cast, exploring the relationship between what is visible and what remains concealed within an object. In his creations, light serves not only as a tool but as a storyteller, revealing and hiding the stillness and motion within each piece.
A self-taught sculptor, Will’s background in design and advertising has shaped his ability to blend physical and allegorical elements in his work. He created his first shadow sculpture at the age of 17, and by 18, his work was featured at the Saatchi Gallery. Since then, his shadow sculptures have been exhibited internationally, from prestigious venues such as The Natural History Museum and Chelsea Town Hall to exhibitions as far as Kyrgyzstan and New Zealand. Will's work seeks to illuminate the forgotten and overlooked spaces in our lives, transforming them into captivating focal points—whether in a room, a garden, or a gallery.
