About the Item

Benzoni is one of the great Italians who was celebrated for marble carving in the 19th century. His work is in major museums throughout the world and has a work on the floor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This is a lovely work on many levels and would add a lot to any interior. For the artist, there was a period where Italians were interested in the idea of putting a thin veil over a woman's face - both to technically challenge themselves to carve this effect but also to add a sense of mystery and the avant-garde to their work. A veil also has metaphoric references, such as it can convey modesty, the mystery of women etc The work has a purity to it in its simplicity and it makes reference not to a specific sitter but of women in general. With the downcast eyes there is humility, modesty and separation from the viewer. The bust is of a size to fit on a table or a pedestal very easily.
