About the Item

Important pocket-tray with sea gods by Gustave MICHEL (1851-1924) A very fine bronze group with a gilded patina signed on the side of the base "G. Michel" cast by "Siot-Decauville fondeur Paris" (with the foundry stamp) France circa 1895 height 26 cm width 42 cm depth 39 cm This pocket tray with sea gods exists in two sizes. Here we present the large model. Biography : Gustave Frédéric Michel (1851-1924) known as Gustave Michel was a French sculptor and medalist. He was a student of François Jouffroy and enjoyed great success during his lifetime, both in France and abroad. He most often created allegorical subjects. Recognized by his peers, Gustave Michel received numerous orders from the French State. He thus worked in Paris for the facade of the Opéra-Comique (caryatides, 1898), the Alexandre III bridge ("Modern France", 1900), the Galliera palace ("Au soir de la vie", 1901), the Passy viaduct in 1906 (today Bir-Hakeim bridge) with the two cast groups of the "Blacksmiths" and the "Nautes", the church of the Sacré-Coeur ("Blessing Christ", 1906). He also was the author of the statue of "Autumn", 1904, and the monument to Jules Ferry, 1910, for the Tuileries garden. Gustave Michel exhibited at the Salon from 1875 where he obtained a second class medal. He participated in the Universal Exhibitions in Paris in 1889 (first class medal) and 1900, where the jury awarded him the Grand Prix. Among his many awards, a medal of honor was awarded to him in 1896. Popularizing his success, some of his works were published by the national factory of Sèvres.
