About the Item
For years I have concentrated on large outdoor sculpture in a wide variety of locations: sculpture parks and gardens, city streets, on the banks of (and even in) rivers, placing natural imagery in many different settings. A lifelong study of animals informs my sculptural process; this naturalism is not the sole objective of my work, but a means to convey an expressive moment. The materials I use retain a raw, rough-edged quality, presenting the image with tactile directness. To make the sculptures I search scrap yards and construction sites for steel that has been discarded and ravaged by life in the yard. Bent and twisted, such pieces contain energy and a potential new life. The sculptures are ultimately not just about animals, but use the body language of animals to express a feeling or state of being. The driving force of the work is the dynamic line running throughout, conveying raw energy within a sinuous form to evoke a visceral response in the viewer.

Wendy Klemperer
Wendy Klemperer was born in 1958 in Boston, Massachusetts. Raised in Cambridge and Watertown, she was most able to explore her passion for animals and nature during summers spent at her grandmother's country house in New Hampshire. The daughter of two chemists, she grew up with dual interests of art and the biological sciences and received a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Harvard University before deciding to pursue art full-time. Klemperer moved to New York City in 1980 and studied at Pratt Institute. In the early 1990s, she started welding and soon was concentrating on larger outdoor sculpture. Scrap yards and construction sites provide the raw material for her linear, gestural sculpture. Klemperer finds most of the forms already bent into the piles of rebar, her process is largely to select and cut, tack-welding the pre-existing curves into sculptural form. Klemperer lives in Brooklyn, New York and Nelson, New Hampshire. She has exhibited her work throughout the United States.
