Anna Richards Brewster Landscape Paintings

American, 1870-1952
Anna Richards Brewster (1870–1952) was an accomplished American artist born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her artistic lineage included a poet-playwright mother and a landscape painter father. She studied at Cowles Art School in Boston and under William Merritt Chase and John LaFarge in New York. Notably, she won the Dodge Prize from the National Academy in 1890. Brewster's creative journey led her to Europe, where she painted alongside her father and studied in Paris. Settling in London in 1896, she exhibited at the Royal Academy and illustrated various publications. In 1905, she married and traveled extensively with her husband, further inspiring her art. Despite personal tragedy, including the loss of her son, Brewster continued to contribute to the artistic community. She was a founding member of the Scarsdale Art Association and created notable commissions, including a Red Cross poster during WWI. Brewster's legacy was revived posthumously, with exhibitions at prestigious institutions and growing interest in her work. She passed away in 1952, leaving a diverse body of art encompassing paintings, sculptures, and illustrations. Today, her contributions to late Victorian and early 20th-century art, particularly as a successful international woman artist, continue to gain appreciation and recognition.

Lake Street
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Lake Street, c. 1920 -30s, oil on board, 12 x 9 inches, signed lower right and verso, titled verso About the Painting At the center of Oscar Daniel Soellner’s Lake Street, we see the stairway leading to an elevated railway station on what is now Chicago’s Green Line route. When its first section opened in 1893 as the second permanent elevated rapid transit line in Chicago, this route was known as the Lake Street Elevated Railroad. Chicago’s “L,” like the New York subway and rapid transit system, played an instrumental role in the development of the urban economy and the overall look and feel of the city. The formal aspects of urban railroads and the role they played in efficiently moving large number of everyday citizens across America’s growing metropolises were catnip for many American Scene painters during the first half of the 20th Century. Here, Soellner uses the techniques of the impressionists and the palette of the Ash Can School, to convincingly depict a classic Chicago scene...

Moonlight Along the Coast
Located in Spokane, WA
Measures Painting 20 x 25 inches Framed 24 x 39 inches (approximately) This luminist and atmospheric evening seascape by Granville Redmond (1871 - 1935) was painted on Catalina Island off the California coast c.1920. Redmond was a very prominent California Impressionist known for his serene tranquil and mood-filled California coastal paintings bathed in moonlight with waves gently rolling onto the shore. As a deaf mute, he explained that without speech and hearing, his abilities to see things in a detailed and poetic way were much more honed and enhanced. He was renowned for his Impressionist landscapes, particularly those featuring California wildflowers, coastal scenes, and tonal moonlit settings. Despite his deafness from a young age, Redmond achieved significant acclaim for his art and even acted in silent films, becoming friends with Charlie Chaplin, who built an art studio for him on his large movie lot. Redmond lost his hearing due to scarlet fever as a child and later attended the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley, where his artistic talents were nurtured. He studied at the California School of Design in San Francisco before continuing his studies in Paris at the Académie Julian. He became a highly respected landscape painter, shifting between vibrant Impressionist poppy...

Coming In & Going Out ( Plein Air Landscape painting green yellow colors)
By Jane Chapin
Located in Cody, WY
This is a 'Plein Air" landscape Painting by Jane Chapin as seen in the viewing room exhibition on Silas VON MORISSE GALLERY. “Plein-Air” is the French expression to describe the act of painting in situ within the landscape, capturing the ever changing weather and light with tonal qualities, colour, loose brushwork and softness of form... The practice of “Plein Air Painting” goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir who were advocating of plein air painting. Much of their work was done outdoors in the diffuse light of a large white umbrella. Another major proponent of Plein Air was Jean Baptiste Camille Corot whom Claude Monet considered as “The only One Master here”. Corot provides a transition from the sharp academic style that ruled in his day with focus on the natural world and the lyrical expressiveness of one's work. With her "Plein Air Paintings", Jane Chapin is part of one of the largest art movements in history. Her paintings carry human emotions. We can read her moods and feelings with places that carry deep remembrances for the artist that go beyond the descriptive. "My paintings grow from observing and interpretating light as it emerges from, surrounds and reflects on everyday people and scenes. They seek to remind us of the beauty of our common surroundings, regardless of where we are." - Jane Chapin Jane Chapin Painting the Land of the Free...
