David Levy Black and White Photography

David Levy was born in Landstuhl, Germany, in 1962. At the age of 10, his father took him to The Studio, which was owned by a family friend and accomplished photographer, Harvey Mendelson. This was the start of his life-long passion for photography. While studying communications and art history at college, he met Jerry Burchfield and Mark Chamberlain, the owners of BC Space Gallery, in Laguna Beach, California. As a lab assistant, working side by side with Jerry in the darkroom, he began to refine his technical skills, with color and black & white printing. Considered a master printer, utilizing traditional and alternative processes and the demanding Ilfochrome process, David quickly built a reputation, which has led to collaborations with numerous artists, around the world, to produce exhibition-quality prints. Influenced by classic and contemporary photographers, filmmakers and artists, his conceptual photography reflects an integral connection between environmentalism, social/political activism and mass media influence on social behavior. His recent work deals with issues of racism, perception of place in society and the influence of mass media on lifestyle. Levy’s work has been exhibited extensively in the United States and Europe and is held by numerous private and corporate collections. Commercially, he produces creative and editorial imagery for lifestyle, portraits, travel and product use. He has also produced and curated numerous exhibitions, including works by William Eggelston, Mark Chamberlain, Jerry Burchfield, Glen Perotto, Jose Vasquez, Nils Olav Boe and many other notable photographic artists. He has also served as the country manager for Getty Images, in Denmark and has curated a number of commercial exhibitions for Getty, as part of the “Copenhagen Photo Festival.”

#19, 1970s Nightclubs of Chicago South Side - Rare Vintage Silver Gelatin Print
Located in London, GB
A camera is a window through which a photographer interacts with the world, and it's up to the operator to decide whether his camera will be a barrier or a mirror between he and his subjects. In the 1970s, Michael Abramson chose the latter path when he brought his camera to Pepper's Hideout on Chicago's South Side. Following in the footsteps of his acknowledged influence Gyula Halász, a Hungarian photographer better known as Brassaï who became the pre-eminent chronicler of the Paris nightlife he loved so much, Abramson initiated himself into the nightlife of Chicago's predominantly black neighbourhoods. He was very much a part of the scene he documented on film, drinking, laughing, and dancing with his subjects into small hours and becoming as much a part of the atmosphere as the locals who frequented the same nightspots he did. - Joe Tangari (Numero Group, 2009) This series won Abramson a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1978 and launched his career as a photojournalist. Eventually the project resulted in a hardbound book, Light: On the South Side, including the Grammy and Mojo nominated album, featuring Chicago blues...
