Antique English Edwards & Roberts Coromandel Davenport Desk, 19th Century
By Edwards & Roberts
Located in Glasgow, GB
A rare 19th century Coromandel davenport by Edwards & Roberts of London. Featuring beautiful dark Coromandel veneers to each side highlighted with brass beading and turned and fluted gilt decorated ebonized columns. The top with a brass gallery and red faux leather inset writing slope opening to reveal a satinwood lined interior with two drawers above three smaller faux drawers and a hinged pen drawer to the side. Unusually, both sides open with one door concealing four graduated mahogany drawers with turned inset knob handles, and the other a cupboard or bookcase with a single shelf. On a platform base with concealed castors below. With brass keyhole liners, original locks and working keys, the lock to the slope marked ‘HY ‘. Stamped Edwards & Roberts. Some rippling to the veneers around the edge of the flap, shrinkage to the left hand door veneer and door surrounds, losses to the plinth have been filled. The use of variegated ebony, such as Coromandel, calamander and Macassar became popular in English furniture during the Regency period.

A really very good looking and exceptionally rare find, fully stamped to the right drawer EDWARDS & ROBERTS, the locks are original and again fully stamped “ Secure Lever” and then the letters VR under the crown, the crown and V.R indicate ownership by the Crown of England, Queen Victoria, expressed in Latin as "Victoria Regina". It doesn't mean it was royalty just that the patent was issued during the period of Queen Victoria.
The desk is ebonised as mentioned and has stunning walnut inlay, the craftsmanship in this piece indicate to me this was made for exhibition to show off what the firm can do
The desk has been deep cleaned hand condition waxed and hand polished from top to bottom, it’s in lovely period condition throughout. There are normal patina marks everywhere from genuine use and age, some small inlay losses to the drawers, the leather writing surface is stunning and has the highest quality gold tooling I have ever seen

In 2018, his painting Chop Suey fetched more than $91.8 million at a New York auction. Depicting two women chatting face-to-face in a restaurant, the oil painting is an excellent example of Hopper's interest in capturing the everyday lives of people living in New York City during the first half of the 20th century. In Hopper’s vision, the people inhabiting his city and suburban scenes are often lonely, anonymous, temporary inhabitants of sometimes inhospitable environments. When there is no human element, he transfers these qualities to the architecture or even to the landscape itself, using intense light to infuse emotion. If you own a Hopper painting, a certified appraiser or knowledgeable art dealer can assist you with the valuation process. Shop an assortment of Edward Hopper art on 1stDibs.

While the company manufactured many types of tableware, including pieces made of solid silver and silver-plated objects, the American manufacturer's inlaid silverware owed to a unique inlay manufacturing process pioneered by Holmes & Edwards.
