"Two Bottles" American Scene Realism Mid 20th Century Female Artist WPA 1940's
Helen Clark Oldfield "Two Bottles," 1943. Signed “Helen Oldfield” lower right. Oil on canvas board, 18 x 14 inches. Provenance: Estate of the Artist.
Helen Clark Oldfield was born in Santa Rosa. Her father, James E. Clark, invested in local hops farms. He was a director of the first Santa Rosa Bank.
Oldfield lived at 547 Mendocino Avenue, in one of the finest custom-built homes in town. She was the oldest child of the family. They spent summers in their beach cabin at Jenner-by-the-Sea.
She was a good student and graduated from DeWitt Montgomery High in Santa Rosa with college standard grades. Unfortunately, this idyllic situation tumbled down suddenly. due to a fraud scandal at the Bank, her father forfeited most of his assets in order to make good on his client's losses.
At the time when her high school friends were going east to college, Oldfield followed her family to a new life of farming. She found this life frustrating as there was little time for her interests after conclusion of her daily duties. Here she developed her natural gift for sophisticated needle work. At the time she also took a correspondence course in industrial design and became an expert tailor.
Her family was not happy with the farming arrangement. They decided to move to Oakland. In 1921 they purchased a home at 318...

Southland Booths
By Matt Condron
Located in Fairfield, CT
Having spent many years as a photographer, Matt Condron is trained to recognize the importance of a moment or the preciousness of a fleeting opportunity. He is captivated by the idea of emptiness, as both a suggestion of solitude and as a state rife with the possibility of change and fulfillment. As a painter, he seeks out familiar, evocative scenes and concentrates on capturing the stillness of an empty room or vacant chair. His paintings can be seen as solitary, or as simply aberrant pauses between moments of frantic activity.
The works are imbued with a quality of light that brings simple, content-rich objects into sharp focus. Condron attempts to establish not so much a connection to a chair or a room, but the feeling created by the wide embrace of emptiness. Ultimately, Condron creates scenes - part representation of real places, part invention from deep in his mind. The openness of his works invites the viewer to share the moment of quiet with him. By choosing places that seem to have been abruptly vacated, he attempts to awaken a connection to the moment before, or to the quietude he preserves inside himself in the form of memories.
Matt Condron was born in 1967 in Simi Valley...

Still life Chinese Ball
By Willard Dixon
Located in Burlingame, CA
Willard Dixon, who says "the charm of Still Life painting for the artist lies in the ability to manipulate ones subject matter and in the intimate, direct nature of the painting process. It is very much a studio-centric activity, complete and self-sufficient. The objects that one works with do seem to take on a life of their own, both by themselves and in their affinity for one another. They have a history, a patina, they may be new, or world-weary."
The artist continues, "My collection has been substantially whittled down to an essential few over the years, yet their combinations seem infinite. There is a lengthy and persistent shuffling, adding and eliminating to find that particular combination that suddenly takes on a rightness or self-sufficiency. It is interesting how one small object of the right color in the right place can facilitate such an event, or in another case the removal of something, a simplifying. I have a feeling when composing these paintings similar to my experience of playing with my jazz group. The key, the tempo, the dynamics, all come together, and there is a point when everything clicks and propels the music into a life of its own greater than the sum of its individual parts". —Willard Dixon
