Ian Fleming More Furniture and Collectibles

Scottish, 1906-1994

Ian Fleming was an intelligence officer, journalist and creator of the fictional British Secret service agent James Bond. Fleming was born in Green Street in London, on May 28, 1908. Beginning in 1939, he served as a liaison between the Navy and the other secret services, where he was privy to the highest levels of intelligence and became known for his creativity in planning operations, work that inspired his later novels. After the war, Fleming became a journalist and in 1953 published his first James Bond novel, Casino Royale. It was a success and Fleming wrote a new book each year until his untimely death on August 12, 1964, in Canterbury.

[Younger & Hirsch 7; Greenaway 95] Dr. Seuss was challenged by Houghton Mifflin's Education Division director, William Ellsworth Spaulding, to create a book for young children using the 225 essential words for beginning readers, a book they would not want to put down. Seuss used 223 of the words from the list, plus 13 others. Seuss tricked kids into enjoying learning with his destructive and charismatic house guest. Inspired in part by Krazy Kat and Felix the Cat, but with a wily mind all his own, the Cat in the Hat's humor and naughtiness are engaged in the noble cause of literacy. "Parents," notes biographer Brian Jay Jones, "were more than happy to join Dr. Seuss as fellow revolutionaries. Even if parents didn't necessarily understand the pedagogy, it was easy to see the difference between the staid DICK AND JANE...

Diamonds Are Forever by Ian Fleming, First Edition, 1956
By Ian Fleming
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Fleming, Ian. Diamonds are Forever. London: Jonathan Cape, 1956. First edition, first printing. Octavo. Rebound in full black calf leather, with diamond stamped boards, gilt tooling, gilt titles, and raised bands to spine, and a spectacular quarter leather clamshell case. This is the first edition, first printing of Ian Fleming’s fourth James Bond novel, Diamonds are Forever. The book was published by Jonathan Cape in London on March 26, 1956. The book tracks 007 as he infiltrates the deadly world of diamond smuggling, tracking smugglers from Sierra Leone to the United States. Fleming wrote the story at his Goldeneye estate in Jamaica, inspired by a Sunday Times article on diamond smuggling. As with the three previous Bond books, the first edition of 12,500 copies sold out quickly. The novel was serialized in The Daily Express newspaper in April 1956 onwards. It was the first novel Fleming sold to the newspaper, a decision that led to an overall rise in the novel’s sales. Book sales were also assisted by the press in November 1956, following the visit of Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden...

Casino Royale by Ian Fleming, 60th Anniversary Bentley Special Edition, 2013
By Ian Fleming
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
As part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel, Casino Royale, vintage Classics partnered with Bentley Motors to create a luxury limited edition of the book that introduced Special Agent 007 to the world. The special edition printing features an exclusive introduction from racing legend, Sir Stirling Moss, making it a true collector’s item. Just 500 editions were produced in this limited run. This edition book was published on November 1, 2013, exclusively from Random House. The Bentley is James Bond’s car of choice in the original Fleming novels and Ian Fleming was a huge admirer of the Bentley Boys, seduced by their adventures on the racing track. In his introduction, Sir Stirling Moss comments: “When it came to cars Fleming really knew his stuff… he must have known that the fabulous pre-war Bentleys won at Le Mans four years in a row from 1927-30.” This iconic edition aimed to capture that spirit of adventure and the glamour associated with these leading British brands. The book was created by designers Kris Potter and Stephen Parker at Random House, who were inspired following a trip to the Bentley Motors HQ in Crewe. “We knew that any design we came up with would have to reflect the incredible craftsmanship and heritage we had seen in the Bentley cars at Crewe, the Challenge for us was how we could combine this with the coolness and nostalgia of Bond... The inspiration was endless.” From the hand-bound beluga leather...
