Kansai Yamamoto was the designer du jour for David Bowie throughout the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. He conceptualized several of the enduring visuals we associate with Bowie, including the iconic Ziggy Stardust outfits. Kansai also designed the asymmetric striped body suit which appeared on the back of the "Station to Station" cover, and rather tragically once more in Bowie’s “Lazarus” music video. Kansai’s work was less maudlin and more reverential to traditional Japanese imagery than his anti-fashion peers, and his influence can be seen in the gleeful maximalism of designers like Alessandro Michele of Gucci.
