Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Ceramics
English, b. 1877
Founded in 1750 by Andrew Planche and William Duesbury in Derby, England, the Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company is one of the oldest original English manufacturers of fine bone china. Dating to the Georgian era, it has operated for more than 265 years.
In 1761, the company, then called Derby Porcelain, created its first commemorative piece for the coronation of King George III. In 1775, King George III recognized the uniqueness and high quality of Derby Porcelain, giving the company the honor of using a crown on its back stamp. Queen Victoria gave further honors to the porcelain manufacturer in 1890, when she awarded the company a royal warrant and bestowed upon it the title of “The Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company.”
In the years following the first royal appointment, the company employed some of its finest artistic creators, such as watercolor landscape painter Zachariah Boreman; flower painters William Billingsley, William Pegg and Walter Withers; and figure painters Richard Askew and James Banford. The company produced the most sought-after collectible pieces in its history under the direction of William Duesbury II. He died at 34 and his full vision for the company went unrealized; it subsequently entered a period of decline.
In 1811, Robert Bloor revived the company by employing excellent painters and producing exquisite serving pieces that featured the Japanese Imari style of bold colors and lavish details. The popular design continues to be produced today. Modern pieces such as the paperweight collection also remain in demand more than 40 years after their introduction.
Under the creative control of different partners over time, the company has had three main locations. Its current base of operations is in Derby, where it continues to produce fine ceramics and decorative collectibles.

This outstanding hand painted 19th century French ceramic charger was made by Hautin Boulenger & Cie at Creil & Montereau. The highly detailed Aesthetic Movement charger features polychrome decoration depicting a Japanese quail perched in a flowering cherry tree bearing vivid green foliage. The bird's gaze is fixed on a colorful butterfly with intricately patterned wings which is located off to one side. The image is set on a gilt ground which bears a series of repeating raised gilt motifs. The charger's shoulder is finished in cobalt blue with stylized gilt hearts separated by light blue floral and foliate elements.
The 4lb 11oz charger bears an impressed mark used by Creil et Montereau between 1876-1884. The foot rim is not pierced.

This is a good Mason’s ironstone large dinner plate produced at the time when Mason's was owned and controlled by George L Ashworth and Brothers after the bankruptcy of C J Mason in 1848.
This large plate is decorated in a the striking chinoiserie pattern called "Flying Bird" pattern, as illustrated on Page 121 of "A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns" published by The Mason's Collectors' Club. The pattern would have been transfer printed then boldly hand enameled with good detail. The plate also has a mid-brown / ochre hand painted outer rim simulating the Chinese plates of the time and earlier periods.

This is a good porcelain Coffee Can or cup hand painted and gilded in pattern 129, made by the Derby factory, in the reign of George 111 in the early 19th century, circa 1805 to 1810.
It is nominally straight sided with a square grooved handle.
The Coffee Can has been exquisitely hand decorated in a French influenced "Chantilly" pattern number 129, consisting of scattered sprigs of cornflowers and harebells in pink, blue and green with gilt leaves and stalks. There is also a cornflower sprig hand painted in the base of the can (not often found) with further hand gilding around the rim and handle section.

This is a very good early coffee cup by the Derby factory, made in the late 18th century, George 3rd period, circa 1790.
The body of the cup has 16 vertical flutes and has a plain loop handle.
It is decorated with gilt rims with the outer rim gilding shadowed in pale blue. There is a border of black diamond shapes, outlined in gilt, each containing a pearl. Beneath the border is a further gilt line with blue shadow. The handle also has a hand gilded pattern.
This pattern is number 135 and is listed on page 293 of John Twitchett's book; Derby Porcelain, 1748-1848, published by The Antique Collectors Club.
The cup is fully marked to the base with the crown and crossed batons painted in puce, with the pattern number 135 below.
