Georgian Derby Coffee Can Chantilly Sprigs gilded Pattern 129, circa 1810
About the Item
This is a good porcelain Coffee Can or cup hand painted and gilded in pattern 129, made by the Derby factory, in the reign of George 111 in the early 19th century, circa 1810.
It is nominally straight sided with a plain loop handle.
The Coffee Can has been exquisitely hand decorated in a French influenced "Chantilly" pattern number 129, consisting of scattered sprigs of cornflowers and harebells in pink, blue and green with gilt leaves and stalks. There is also a cornflower sprig hand painted in the base of the can (not often found) with further hand gilding around the rim and handle section.
It has the early Derby crown and cross batons mark, in red to the base, together with the "D" below. There is also a number "9" below the D, which will be the painter or gilders mark.
Similar shaped Coffee Cans, one with the same shape handle, are illustrated on page 283 of the reference book - Derby Porcelain by John Twitchett, published by the Antique Collectors Club.
We date this piece to circa 1810.
