Robert Mars’ graphic compositions and rich colors provide an ideal medium in which to explore his fascination with the Golden Age of American popular culture and the icons of the 1950’s and 60’s. Drawing inspiration from the near-mythical fame that surrounded celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn before the instant and all-encompassing presence of the internet, Mars’ daring approach creates paintings with a nostalgic yet innovative vintage quality.
Mars begins by defining borders and background planes of color with sheets of brown paper and then proceeds to layer paint and vintage paper ephemera. He selectively sands segments of the layers, allowing specific portions of the underpainting to shine through, creating the sensation that the viewer is getting glimpses through a window into the Golden Age of America. By incorporating actual pieces of print from the eras he so adores and sealing it all under shining, impenetrable resin, Mars’s artworks transform into physical remembrances of a period in America’s past so loved and idolized, yet will forever remain trapped in history.
A graduate of Parsons School of Design in New York, his artwork was selected for the Absolut Vodka Blank campaign alongside Damien Hirst, and his largest sized piece to date was acquired by Philip Morris/Altria for their corporate headquarters in Virginia. In 2015 Mars was chosen for the cover of Neiman Marcus’ May Book, while CocaCola purchased several existing works and ordered commissions for a world tour celebrating the 100-year anniversary of their trademark bottle shape, in which his artwork was spotlighted. Monaghan's paintings have always shown a sensitivity and reverence for light on the cusp of change. Says Monaghan, “Many of my paintings which depict dawn or dusk represent a special place and time when I am most compelled to reflect on nature, study its elements, and meditate on the way light and shadow interact. The process of change at these times makes me attentive.”
In his current work, Monaghan investigates the effects of transitional light on water. One sees the glint of a low, strong sun bursting through trees and the heavy filter of atmosphere in these paintings. Light and wind conspire to create bold, abstract designs on a lake surface.
Monaghan creates an evocative realism in his paintings, made all the more compelling by his skillful handling of paint. Textures and surfaces are built up, and the fluid application of these materials effectively embodies the qualities of water and land. Upon close inspection, realism takes a back seat to process and the physical effects of paint and glazes. All of these qualities unite to evoke memories of time and place.

In the 1980’s, after studying cartography at UC Santa Barbara and drawing maps for the UCLA faculty, Langford began exploring ways to combine his mastery of map-making with his love of fine art.
In his original map paintings, Langford reinterprets geography by taking selected features from maps and filling in the reconfigured shapes with flurries of color, exploring varied locations such as Essex, England and the Galapagos Islands. In his “Morphic” series, Langford once again finds inspiration in specific geographic regions, abstracting them until they are nearly unrecognizable with colors interweaving and flowing around each other. Almost seeming to mimic the fluid strata of the Earth, Langford adds and scrapes away layers of oil paint, building up intricate textures while simultaneously revealing the colors below.
Langford’s highly-collected “Chroma” series began as a happy mistake. One day, displeased with the brushwork of a painting, he decided to obscure the image by painting small rows of vertical brushstrokes; in doing so, he took note of the beauty of organic uniformity. After years of refining his technique, Langford created the trance-like paintings that he likes to think of as rows of city blocks on a map.

Josh Brown has had a lifetime interest in creating art, most notably through his depiction of animals. He swiftly captures the mood of his subjects and brings the personality of each creature to life in a very graphic way. His bold minimalist style captures the energy and attitude of his subjects creating joy, magnetic characters, and curiously subtle movement. Brown does this deftly with sculptural brush strokes and refined palette knife. The work of Josh Brown is designed to inspire us to live curiously in goodwill and humor, in art and life.
