This painting reimagines the moment when Cleopatra contemplates suicide after her battlefield loss to Octavian. In this revisionist history, Cleopatra thinks better of suicide, and at the last minute redirects her servants to pass the basket of fruit with the asp on to the triumphant Octavian who sweeps in with his entourage. In this scene, Octavian reaches for an apple, triggering the asp to strike. This, like most of my recent work, reimagines historical, mythological, and literary motifs to destabilize the inherent power structures within those narratives. The style adopted is Rococo, which coincided with the rise of Colonialism. The style therefore relates to the historical narrative of this piece which shows the conquest and colonization of a colonial ruler.
In my current work, The Revisionist Histories, I am writing letters to art history, literature, and mythology in an attempt to reflect the social changes that have reshaped our society over the past century. As part of this agenda, I explore the evolution of gender norms, power dynamics, and representation within Western visual culture and what this implies for the negotiation between pleasure, justice, and our culturally specific discourse on beauty.
The seed for The Revisionist Histories was sewn when I caught a glimpse of my preteen daughters watching music videos on their iPad as I chopped veggies for dinner. Out of the corner of my eye I caught glimpses of music videos featuring Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, and Doja Cat gyrating across the tiny screen. The Dissidents: Discourse on the Golden Mean

This work draws a connection between the didactic moralizing tendencies of Neo Classicism (represented in the style of the painting) and Modernism (represented in the architectural setting). Though modern art eschews the naturalistic imagery used by Neo Classicists, both movements pursued a self-important, austere, self-consciously masculine aesthetic that they saw as synonymous with virtue. Set in the MoMA courtyard, a passel of men lounge about, regarding a golden statue which looks terribly out of place in this modernist vitrine. The uncomfortable architectural setting, prisonlike and cold, provides a foil for the odalisque-like young men sprawled on hard stone benches and paying homage to the central idol.

A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Brandon V. Lewis is the product of a single mothers love and dedication and the beneficiary of the hard work and strong convictions of his grandparents. Lewis began drawing at the age of three, when he returned from school one evening, the teacher sent an assignment home which instructed his parent to draw a bumblebee and he was to color it. Not being gifted with the talent to draw his mother handed him the pencil and told him to ‘try’, and he did more than try, when his mother looked at the paper he had in fact drawn a bumblebee that looked better than one any adult in the house could fashion.
After the faithful bumblebee assignment Lewis’ grandmothers began to invest in his talent. He would be given drawing tablets, pencils and most importantly a wealth of motivation. It was his maternal grandmother, a devout woman of God who told him ‘ the lord has blessed you with a gift, and it will make room for you.’ As he traveled through the East Baton Rouge Parish School System he was admitted to the talented arts program and was introduced to phenomenal art teachers who introduced him to mediums he had never heard of. His high school art Mr. Bob White shed light on the style Lewis had created. He pointed out how even though he didn’t paint faces on any of his subjects, Lewis’ paintings still told very colorful and complex stories. where he received intensive training and a master of fine arts degree in his homeland’s
traditional art academies. He immigrated to San Francisco in 1992, met his future wife in
Hattiesburg, Mississippi, then married and settled in New Orleans. He maintains a home and
studio in Madisonville, Louisiana, and is a significant but understated figure in the New Orleans
art community. As art critic D. Eric Bookhardt suggested in 2002, “Stolin is more accomplished
than he is famous.” His art, often exhibited in thematic series that incorporate a variety of media,
ranges from intimate portraits to large-scale murals (one measuring twelve feet by seventy-two
feet). He has worked on a progressively larger scale, most recently designing and painting
projects for the Louisiana film industry. Stolin’s technically proficient and complexly layered art
reflects a unique fusion of the academic training he received in Kiev and his evolving response
to the very different culture, lifestyle, and subject matter he has discovered in New Orleans,
Madisonville, and the Gulf South.
Stolin was born on August 30, 1963. His art abilities were quickly recognized when in fourth
grade he qualified for admission to the State School of Art in Kiev, which he attended from 1975
to 1981. He decided to concentrate on book illustration and graphic arts, and after graduating he
was accepted into the Ivan Fedorov Polygraphic Institute in Moscow, where he studied from
1982 to 1988, graduating with a master of fine arts degree in 1988. He trained as a printmaker,
creating etchings and lithographs, and as a graphic designer, and worked as a designer in Kiev.
“I illustrated mysteries, science fiction, and different magazines,” he said. In 1988, after his
family visited relatives in San Francisco, California, the Stolins decided to immigrate to the
United States, a process that took four years. In 1992, Stolin and his parents immigrated to San
Francisco, and he worked for graphic design and print businesses in nearby Emeryville,
California. During a trip to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he was visiting cousins, Stolin met
Mary Kay Holmes. The couple soon married and moved to New Orleans, where Stolin
established himself as a working artist and began to exhibit in local galleries and group
exhibitions.
The art Stolin began to create in New Orleans demonstrated his technical skills, knowledge of
art history, and the evolving range of his subject matter, reflected from one series and exhibition
to the next, yet it was challenging for critics to classify his work. This was evident in the series
Stolin exhibited during his first decade in the city, beginning with Byzantium on the Bayou
(1993–1994), which combined historical Byzantine art references with New Orleans and Mardi
Gras subjects, such as Mardi Gras Madonna and Adoration of St. Gator. In his Midnight Dessert
series (1995–1997), he created works such as Tea in Manhattan and Rembrandt and Nathan, a
large painting that Bookhardt described as “a vision of Rembrandt and various Dutch masters
promenading down the sidewalk past Nathan’s Deli in New York.” Following that, he completed
The Water Series (1998–1999), featuring reflective and heavily worked surfaces in paintings
such as Reflections #2 and Study of Fish and Swimmers.

studio in Madisonville, Louisiana, and is a significant but understated figure in the New Orleans
art community. As art critic D. Eric Bookhardt suggested in 2002, “Stolin is more accomplished
than he is famous.” His art, often exhibited in thematic series that incorporate a variety of media,
ranges from intimate portraits to large-scale murals (one measuring twelve feet by seventy-two
feet). He has worked on a progressively larger scale, most recently designing and painting
projects for the Louisiana film industry. Stolin’s technically proficient and complexly layered art
reflects a unique fusion of the academic training he received in Kiev and his evolving response
to the very different culture, lifestyle, and subject matter he has discovered in New Orleans,
Madisonville, and the Gulf South.
Stolin was born on August 30, 1963. His art abilities were quickly recognized when in fourth
grade he qualified for admission to the State School of Art in Kiev, which he attended from 1975
to 1981. He decided to concentrate on book illustration and graphic arts, and after graduating he
was accepted into the Ivan Fedorov Polygraphic Institute in Moscow, where he studied from
1982 to 1988, graduating with a master of fine arts degree in 1988. He trained as a printmaker,
creating etchings and lithographs, and as a graphic designer, and worked as a designer in Kiev.
“I illustrated mysteries, science fiction, and different magazines,” he said. In 1988, after his
family visited relatives in San Francisco, California, the Stolins decided to immigrate to the
United States, a process that took four years. In 1992, Stolin and his parents immigrated to San
Francisco, and he worked for graphic design and print businesses in nearby Emeryville,
California. During a trip to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he was visiting cousins, Stolin met
Mary Kay Holmes. The couple soon married and moved to New Orleans, where Stolin
established himself as a working artist and began to exhibit in local galleries and group
exhibitions.
The art Stolin began to create in New Orleans demonstrated his technical skills, knowledge of
art history, and the evolving range of his subject matter, reflected from one series and exhibition
to the next, yet it was challenging for critics to classify his work. This was evident in the series
Stolin exhibited during his first decade in the city, beginning with Byzantium on the Bayou
(1993–1994), which combined historical Byzantine art references with New Orleans and Mardi
Gras subjects, such as Mardi Gras Madonna and Adoration of St. Gator. In his Midnight Dessert
