Settee Sofa Couch Knole Velvet Strie Olive 3-seater H44" Adjustable L67-101"
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
- This is an early 20th century interpretation of the infamous, sumptuously, upholstered, 17th century, couch with hinged arm rests, found at Knole Park, Sevenoaks, Kent, the ancestral seat of the Sackvilles made by the most eminent upholsterer of the early 20th century.
- The original couch served the Dual purpose of bed and settee, and is one of the earliest examples of English, upholstered, seat furniture. In the late-19th century this model of settee was revived, particularly for Great Halls, bedrooms and galleries in large country houses for its early aesthetic, comfort and draught exclusion from the high backs. - These settees are extremely comfortable as well as injecting period atmosphere into the interior. They sit equally well within contemporary and historical interiors and jutapose with contemporary and modern pieces and art.
- This is a particularly fine example, with a Grade II* listed Jacobean manor house provenance and almost certainly made by Morant & Co. It retains the original iron ratchets so the wings can be lowered to different heights.
The inside and outside back, wings, seat and cushion are upholstered in a strie velvet and trimmed in the traditional manner with matching braid and fringe and studs. The strie velvet probably dates from the 1950's, as there is significant fading from the original pale green/aqua to a pale olive/old white. The adjustable padded wings are joined to the arms with original ratched iron hinges which are attached to the back. The arms are supported by oak turned uprights. The seat has a large loose cushion. Standing on original castors. English, circa 1900.
During the late 16th-early 17th century a new form of daybed was introduced to match the contemporary upholstered 'X' chairs and stools. They were padded and upholstered throughout and the ends were let down on a toothed steel ratchet to enable the occupant to repose at full length. They were generally destroyed when the coverings had worn out at the woodwork was of little value. Similar couches were plentiful in France under Louis XIII and can be seen in Abraham Bosse's engravings of domestic interiors but they were only found at court and the houses of great noblemen in this country. When the contents of the Royal Palaces were dispersed after Charles I's execution a number of couches were included in the sale.
PROVENANCE : Barrow Court, a Grade II* listed Jacobean manor house with origins dating back to the 13th century.
MORANT & CO Upholsterers, Decorators. 91 New Bond St., London. With Royal Coat of Arms, dated 1825, 1831, 1837 and 1890, founded 1790.
The dictionary of English furniture makers 1660-1840, published by the Furniture History Society informs that Morant Snr. was a maker of carved and gilded frames from early in the reign of George IVth, and his trade card describes the company as 'Ornamental Painter and Paper Hanging Manufacturer to their Royal Highnesses'. Work was executed for Sir Thomas Lawrence, Sir Robert Peel...

Similar or the same model chairs can also be seen in Goldfinger (1963) in Goldfinger's private jet that brings James Bond (Sean Connery) and Pussy Galore (Honor Blackman) to the United States. Armchair Wing Sleeping Walnut Upholstered Bargello Cresting Baroque H-Stretcher
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
A museum quality, late-17th century, walnut, upholstered sleeping armchair
• Exceptionally rare model; one of the first models of upholstered armchair with the addition of the wings intended to conceal draughts.
• Transitional form : many of the carved features are characteristic of Baroque furniture dating from 1680 and the incorporation of upholstery is influenced by the desire for comfort post restoration of Charles II introducing French fashions to the English court.
• Striking, statement piece. The cresting, “H” stretcher and scrollwork carving which features throughout the chair inject gravitas.
• Practical size and ergonomic comfortable design, suitable for regular use.
The original, carved, walnut cresting supported by a pair of dragons with scrollwork either side of a central stylised leaf spray. The shaped rectangular back with wings. The sweeping arms with carved scroll ends supported by tapering turned uprights emerging from blocks. The rectangular seat supported by double scroll carved and column turned legs joined by an ‘H’stretcher which mirrors the shape of the back in the centre with finial, column turned side and back stretcher and back legs. Exceptional original colour and patina. c.1690.
CONDITION : re-upholstered in a recreation of 17th century, Italian, bargello embroidery which is characteristic of the period. Tiny marks, wear and losses as expected throughout the armchair. The finial is a C19 or early C20 replacement. The stretcher has suffered from worm damage and there are replaced sections at either end of 1” and 1½ “ respectively, and an area to the left of the finial has been filled. This work was not done by me and has some age to it and the finial was probably replaced at the same time. The armchair is sturdy and suitable for regular use.

This stool is sophisticated, elegant and refined and the flying bird on the tapestry is a charming and unusual feature. The fine turnings, and x-stretcher evolved into the design of late-17th century English furniture in response to Continental fashions. At the same time, cabinet makers responded to the fashion for expensive Oriental laquered furniture by ebonising or black-japanning...

Armchair, Walnut, Carved, Upholstered, Daniel Marot, Flemish, 17 Century Baroque
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
A fine, large, late 17th century, Flemish, open armchair in the style of Daniel Marot with an upholstered seat
This fine, armchair is an, unusually, large size and the carving is of exceptional quality reflecting the status of the owner it was made for. It is sturdy and in usable condition. Chairs of this type, with tall, intricately carved backs, were placed in rows against a wall forming part of the decoration of a room. The carving of the back of this chair is French in style and was based on decorative prints by Daniël Marot
The cresting carved with a profusion of acanthus leaf scrolls. The back with fine, pierced carving. The mid-section with a central flowerhead with scrolled shields above and below ornamented with flowerheads acanthus leaf crestings. Two pairs of carved ‘S’ scrolls ornamented with acanthus leaves either side. The tapering turned sections surmounted by ionic capitals and supporting back of the scroll arms carved with acanthus leaf ornament. The front arms supported by baluster and tapering turned sections ornamented with acanthus leaf carving. The legs joined by a shaped ‘H’ stretcher with central finial, on bun feet. The upholstered seat reupholstered in a bargello woven in tones of blue, green, red and gold faced with braid and brass studwork.
The back of the chair has an incredible, 19th century, oak support from the cresting to halfway down the back, which has been beautifully carved to conform with the open sections of the back, and two braces down the length of the back. There are also two oak supports behind seat blocks at the top of the legs. These repairs are sensitive to the model of chair and have become part of its character and features in their own right and they are very interesting from a conservation history perspective. There are two old repairs to a small break in the cresting on the right hand side and the hairline cracks are visible, an old repair to a small break in the top right of the central splat with a small piece added and a visible hairline crack. The right side of the back has noticeable worm damage on the right seat block which is probably the root cause of the break on the block on this side from impact as the chair probably fell backwards at some point and either onto its right side or it hit something on that side and the block weakened by worm gave way as the damage to the chair is localised on the far right side. Because the backs are high on these Daniel Marot chairs they are top heavy and invariably do have damage to the backs and crestings from impact damage so this is not unusual. The right block has been repaired thoroughly and is stable and there is no live worm in the chair. It would be possible to disguise these repairs but I have left them as they are consistent with the 19th century date of the supports and conform with museum standards. A full set of photographs...

Armchair, Pair, Hunting Trophy, Antler, Red Deer, Fallow, Wild Boar, Hide
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
Pairs of hunting trophy armchairs are exceptionally rare. This pair are also unusual because they are made from a few large antlers giving them a minimalist quality. The fluid form of the antlers creates a sculptural, organic aesthetic. They are also usable and very comfortable. It has taken great skill to make these chairs, selecting massive antlers to create exquisite form and stability within a minimalistic, sculptural aesthetic. They are dramatic and unusual injecting a naturalistic and organic gravitas to any interior which reflects the grace, agility and presence of the kings of forest that they came from.
The impressive crestings, sides and front stretchers on each armchair are made from five magnificent fallow deer antlers. The arms and supports on each chair are made from eight massive red deer antlers. The antlers are arranged creatively to create both, a stable structure and sculptural form. The seats are upholstered in wild boar hide.
Dimensions: Width 91cm., 35.83in., Height 132cm., 51.97in., Depth 96cm., 37.80in.

“There is grace and movement in the antler itself. They’re one of the most beautiful forms in nature…” Gail Flynn
Hunting trophies have been used as source material for clothes hooks, storage racks and lamps since the 15th century. Mounting antlers and stuffed heads on walls provided impressive, decorative displays for hunting trophies. A hunting lodge replete with antlers and stuffed animals was most likely where ideas for antler furnishings emerged.
At the beginning of the 19th century antler furniture was made exclusively for the European nobility to decorate palaces, castles and country seats. The furniture was either made completely from stag antler, or it was decorated with antler pieces from the stag, deer, fallow deer and others, or veneered with sliced antler pieces to create a hunting design.
The first recorded antler furniture dates from 1825, made for a hunting castle of Count William of Nassau near Wiesbaden, Germany. Other famous collections of historical antler furniture are the hunting room in the country estate of the brandhof of Archduke Johann of Austria or the antler collection of Count Arco in his palace in Munich, Germany. There are hundreds of drawings of creative antler decorations by the Austrian furniture maker Joseph Danhauser (1780-1829).
In 1851, chairs, chests of drawers and a sofa made of horns were exhibited at the Great Exhibition Of The Industries Of All Nations in London which were considered one of the great novelties of this iconic exhibition. This created a new lifestyle trend and fashion driven by the ambitious European middle-class and antler furniture disseminated into bourgeoisie households. One of the first designers is the German ivory carver and furniture maker H. F. C. Rampendahl who gained enthusiastic successes on several world exhibitions with his antler furniture. An antler bureau, a horn seating group or individual chairs, decorated gun cabinets, H.F.C. Rampendahl created a whole new design world for fashioning rooms. This prompted other designers in Germany Austria and USA to make antler furniture H.F.C. Rampendahl, Hamburg, P. Incorporating 'Stones of Bath' into this settee is inspired the pipers use of one of the five designs commissioned for their centenary, ‘The Glyders’, as loose covers for the chairs at their home Fawley bottom which John Betjeman called ‘Fawley Bum’.
'Stones of Bath' is one of five John Piper (1903-1992) designs commissioned by Arthur Sanderson & Sons in 1959 for their 1960 centenary celebrations. In 1962 Sanderson's screen printed ‘Stones of Bath’ on their Sanderlin fabric, a satinised linen which gave the design a shimmering, restless texture. This was ideally suited to the play of light depicted on the stone in the architectural repeat of buildings in the city of Bath.
A piece of this fabric which is in the collection of the V&A was exhibited at the John Piper retrospective held at the Tate Gallery, London, 1983. Reference: 'Artists’ Textiles in Britain 1945-1970', Cat. No. 74.
From the late 1950s-early 1960s there was interest in painterly textiles that demonstrated the unique potential of screen printing, with its ability to capture the quality of brush-stroked color. 'The monumental grandeur of many artists' textiles in the early 1960s was necessary if they were to work in the large scale architectural interiors of the era which witnessed a rapid growth in new public buildings, all which required furnishing with suitably prestigious fabrics'. Knole Armchair, English, Morant & Co, Green Strie Velvet
By Morant & Co.
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
This is an early 20th century interpretation of an armchair inspired by the infamous, sumptuously, upholstered, 17th century, couch with hinged arm rests, found at Knole Park, Sevenoaks, Kent, the ancestral seat of the Sackvilles made by the most eminent upholsterer of the early 20th century. The original couch served the dual purpose of bed and settee, and is one of the earliest examples of English, upholstered, seat furniture. This is a particularly fine example, with a Morant & Co provenance. A matching 3-settee is also available
The inside and outside back, wings, seat and cushion are upholstered in green strie velvet and trimmed in the traditional manner with matching braid and fringe. The strie velvet could be original, if this armchair has been lightly used, as there is significant fading from the original bright green. The adjustable padded wings are joined to the arms with original ratched iron hinges which are attached to the back. The arms are supported by oak turned uprights. The seat has a large loose cushion. Standing on original castors. English, circa 1900.
Bearing the fabric retail label of Morant & Co Upholsterers, Decorators. 91 New Bond St., London. with Royal Coat of Arms, dated 1825, 1831, 1837 & 1890, founded 1790.
During the late 16th-early 17th century a new form of day-bed was introduced to match the contemporary upholstered ‘X’ chairs and stools. They were padded and upholstered throughout and the ends were let down on a toothed steel ratchet to enable the occupant to repose at full length. They were generally destroyed when the coverings had worn out at the woodwork was of little value. Similar couches were plentiful in France under Louis XIII and can be seen in Abraham Bosse’s engravings of domestic interiors but they were only found at Court and the houses of great noblemen in this country. When the contents of the Royal Palaces were dispersed after Charles I’s execution a number of couches were included in the sale.
Morant & Co (fl.1885-1915)
The dictionary of English furniture makers 1660-1840, published by the Furniture History Society informs that Morant Snr. was a maker of carved and gilded frames from early in the reign of George IVth, and his trade card describes the company as ‘Ornamental Painter and Paper Hanging Manufacturer to their Royal Highnesses’. Work was executed for Sir Thomas Lawrence, Sir Robert Peel...

Pair of Walnut Armchairs, Late 16th Century, French Renaissance, with Ram Mask C
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
"This rare pair of upholstered open armchairs relate to examples in museum collections in France, the USA and the UK. Few pieces of Renaissance furniture featuring ram’s head motif arm terminals survive as the chairs would have been in the ownership of the elite symbolising leadership and authority. The condition of these armchairs reflects their age and use and they have a rich colour and lustrous patina.
The form of these chairs is characteristic of a stereotypical Renaissance model. The upholstered section of the backs are upholstered in wool with applied 17th century floral needlework faced with gilded studs and supported by square section uprights. The channelled tablet and stylised rosette incised curved arms terminate in acanthus capped carved rams' masks and are supported by column turned uprights headed by an entrelac collar. The ram is a symbol of leadership and authority and it also determination, action, initiative, and Aries, the first sign of the Zodiac. The seats are upholstered in wool with applied 17th century needlework faced with gilded studs and supported by tapering column/ring turned front legs and square section back legs. Some of the stretchers with moulded detailing. Standing on front ball feet. Exceptional original colour and patina. Henri II 1550-60.
Condition: The chairs are both sturdy with exceptional colour and patina. One armchair with a splice on the rhs back leg and replaced but period front and lhs stretcher both bearing old nail marks, two other replaced stretchers and the back uprights bearing old nail marks indicating that they were upholstered at some point. The other armchair with an old repair to a break in the right back leg and an old patch near the end of the leg, replaced but period back and lhs stretcher, small patch to bottom of lhs arm where it meets the support. Old worm marks and some losses. Considering the age of the armchairs, these repairs and replacements are not unusual and consistent with the repairs on the related armchairs in museum collections. They suggest that the chairs either fell backwards at some point or someone leant back while sitting in them.
Back Height 107cm, 42in, Seat Height 59.5cm, 23½in
Width 60cm, 23½ in, Seat 59cm, 23¼in
Depth including arm 59cm, 23¼in, Seat 49cm, 19¼in
Provenance: Deaccessioned by The National Galleries of Scotland
Bearing an old transport label from Alain Moatti (French architect) to Mrs Katz, London
Literature: Related to :
There are comparable armchairs in international museum collections dated to the second half of the 16th century. Most share the following characteristics with the above pair, the form, the ram's mask carved to the end of each arm, the curvilinear outline of the arm rests, the ring turned front legs as well as the plain square section back legs and plain stretchers.
