Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
A rare, late-18th century, silk, embroidered, double hemisphere, world map, blackwork, sampler, showing the tracks of captain cook’s three voyages - Illustrating public understanding of the world in the late-18th century and the recent discoveries of the time delineating the tracks of Captain Cook’s three voyages. - Shows the incentive for further exploration during the 19th century as no mass is indicated within the southern polar region, the interior portions of western North America, Africa, and Australia are still relatively void of detail even though California is no longer shown as an island. - Includes beautifully worked allegories of the four continents Asia, the Americas, Africa & Europe, a cartouche being supported by two angels and a compass - The cream, silk ground is finely embroidered with a variety of stiches in black, silk threads emulating the black ink on maps. -“Recent international conflicts and voyages by Captain Cook and others made the study of geography exciting at the time this map was made. Map Holy Land La Terre Sainte Engraved van Loon Published N de Fer 1703 French
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
La Terre Sainte, The Holy Land, Tiree Des Memoires De M.De.La Rue. Par N. de Fer. Geographe de Sa Majeste Catoliq et de Monseigneur le Dauphin. Avec Privil du Roi 1703 Detailed map of the Holy Land from Nicholas de Fer's L'Atlas Curieux ou le Monde. East is oriented at the top. MAKER Nicolas de Fer 1646-1720 The French cartographer and engraver, Nicolas de Fer, was a master at creating maps that were works of art. The maps that he published were printed during the Baroque period when the decorative arts were characterized by ornate detail. De Fer’s detailed maps and atlases were valued more for their decorative content than their geographical accuracy. Nicolas de Fer was born in 1646. His father, Antoine de Fer, owned a mapmaking firm. At the age of twelve, Nicolas was apprenticed to a Parisian engraver named Louis Spirinx. The family business was starting to decline when his father died in 1673. Nicolas de Fer’s mother, Genevieve, took over the business after the death of her husband. In 1687 the business was passed on to Nicolas and the profits increased after he took over the firm. Nicolas de Fer was a prolific cartographer who produced atlases and hundreds of single maps. He eventually became the official geographer to King Louis XIV of France and King Philip V...

Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
Bronze study of a stretching cheetah. RHS under the belly bearing Ingwe Foundry stamp, ‘S31’ or ‘S3I’, Edition 3/15, monogram BMR. Artist unknown. I have been unsuccessfully resarching who the artist could be. The stretching pose of the cheetah is contemplative with a graceful, ease and content expression suggesting its attunement and hierarchy within the landscape and the animal world. Its power is conveyed with a noble quality in the pose, the sleek form and the sinewy musculature. Beautifully handworked with rich brown patina. Almost certainly inspired by the work of Dylan Lewis...

Etching Glyn Thomas Lighthouse Orford Ness Castle River Alde length
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
Glyn Thomas (b.1946) : Lighthouse, Orford Ness Etching. Artists proof from a limited edition of 150, signed and titled in pencil, f Depicting the lighthouse in the foreground, the Ministry of Defence buildings on the left and the River Alde and with the Castle and Church on the horizon. visible sheet length 46cm., 18",, height 29cm., 11.5" in the original mount and wooden frame length 63.5cm., 25" height 48cm.,19" The encroaching sea eventually got so close that the lighthouse had to go. Rather than simply let it fall into the sea, in July 2020 the entire building began to be carefully dismantled so as not to have any impact on the surrounding sensitive environment. The Orford Ness Lighthouse Trust plan at that time was to remove the lantern room as well as other original features and artefacts with a view to one day creating a lighthouse memorial of some sort on the other side of the Ness, facing Orford town’s quay. In the original pine slip frame height 48cm., 19" length 63cm., 24 1/2" ORFORD NESS Orford Ness is an internationally important site for nature conservation and a designated National Nature Reserve. It is a rare and delicate landscape, consisting of shingle ridges and valleys, deposited over centuries by the sea. 20% of Europe's vegetated shingle is found on Orford Ness. Once a former World War One and World War Two Airfield, the land is now a rich grazing marsh, providing home to birds, deer and rare-breed sheep. It is one of the few sites in the UK with purpose-built facilities for the testing of components of nuclear weapons. Comprising of six 'labs', which now form impressive backdrops on the shingle and the Black Beacon erected in 1928 to house an experimental rotating-loop navigation beacon. GLYNN THOMAS Glynn Thomas was born in Cambridge 1946. He studied at the Cambridge School of Art 1962-67, specialising in illustration and printmaking; taught printmaking at the Ipswich School of Art 1967-79, and is now a full-time artist living in Suffolk. He has illustrated a number of books. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and at the Society’s 1983 annual exhibition his etching ‘Honfleur’, was awarded the Davys’ prize for the best print. In addition, his work has been included in the Houses of Parliament art collection. One man exhibitions include the Dominion Centre Toronto, the John Russell Gallery, Ipswich, Printworks and the Minories, Colchester, the New Ashgate Gallery Farnham, the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, the Lyric Hammersmith, and the Barbican Centre London. L'inspire Inspiration Self Portrait Chagall Lithographe no398
By (after) Marc Chagall
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
L'INSPIRÉ, SELF PORTRAIT, MARC CHAGALL & HIS WIFE VALENTINA VAVA, LITHOGRAPH MOURLOT 398, 1963 A self-portrait of the great artist, depicting him lost in thought before one of his paintings, which is apparently related to his home country Russia, as suggested by the small figure in the lower right of the work. Chagall’s wife Valentina (“Vava”), who was also from Russia, is looking over his shoulder, full of longing. The small surreal elements that are characteristic of Chagall’s paintings are also present here: the silhouettes of the houses that seems to stick out of the painting and a figure with a flute or trombone standing on its head. Chagall Lithographe, Volume II of the catalogue raisonné of Chagall's lithographic work, see Mourlot 398, 1957-1962, Paris 1963, imprinted by Imprimerie Mourlot for the publisher André Sauret. A lithographic plate from the catalog that was published in 10,000 copies. Provenance : Private Collection, purchased with Lovers in Grey...

John Piper Chiesa Della Salute Venice Screenprint Textile 1959 Sanderson
By John Piper
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
JOHN PIPER CH (BRITISH,1903-1992) :CHIESA DELLA SALUTE, VENICE Screenprinted fabric, printed by Sandersons, 1959 In the late 1950's to the early 60's there was interest in painterly textiles that demonstrated the unique potential of screen printing, with its ability to capture the quality of brush-stroked colour "The monumental grandeur of many artists' textiles in the early 1960's was necessary if they were to work in the large scale architectural interiors of the era which witnessed a rapid growth in new public buildings, all which required furnishing with suitably prestigious fabrics". The painterly design is one of five fabrics designed by John Piper (1902-1993) for A Century of Sanderson 1860-1960, Sanderson's prestigious Centenary Collection. This study of the Chiesa della Salute church in Venice was taken from Piper's 1959 travels when he was commissioned by the Arthur Jeffress Gallery in London. He then regularly made paintings of the city, and drew illustrations for an edition of Adrian Stokes...

Bargello Flamestitch Silk Embroidery Florence Spetchley Park Bed Curtains Pair
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
Spetchley park, Bargello, silk, bed curtains adapted into wall hangings in the 19th century • The use of silk, patterning and size suggests that these striking Bargello hangings were almost certainly conceived as bed curtains. In the Green Chamber at Parham House the State Bed is hung with Bargello curtains, pelmets and valences c1620. Like the Parham bed curtains, the Spetchley Park bed curtains have two horizontal pattern repeats in each drop. Needless to say, surviving bed curtains from this period are exceptionally rare as they had value as hangings and for upholstering domestic objects when removed from the bed. • The Spetchley Park bed curtains are really beautiful and luxurious. They were made as elite objects and have not lost their gravitas or their character and charm. • The Spetchley Park bed curtains were adapted into wall hangings in the 19th century. They are versatile and could easily be reinstated as curtains or panels within larger curtains. • Bargello work has a classic timeless quality to it and blends with most decorative schemes whether period or contemporary Each panel is made from two sections of bargello. The step (pattern) comprising two rows of short vertical stitches over two threads of graduating numbers of stitches up and down with two rows of long vertical stiches over six threads of graduating numbers of stitches up and down. Worked in graduating shades of blue, green, brown, red, tan and ivory silks on a hessian ground. The four edges of each hanging are faced with a 19th century, dusky pink fan...
