Bio from Renee Ritter's website:
I'm a New Yorker, born and bred. I was raised with noise and rush and life all around me. My world was vivid technicolor, and no one ran faster than I did. I met and married the man of my dreams, and had the joys and exasperations of raising a family. And all of these events would have been the colors of my canvas if not for the happy opportunity of being able to spend some years in Japan.
Japan is the perfect place to plunk down a New Yorker. While it races along on one level, there is this other part of Japan that forces you to hit the mental brakes until the images racing by slow down enough to actually be seen! Eastern thought is a well from which to draw the pure water that clears the mind and strengthens the soul.
I've had the unbelievable pleasure of turning visions into realities, and of having those pieces of me scattered around the world. I'm thrilled that they've found so much acceptance in exhibitions, and I'm humbled at the thought that they hang on the walls of museums. But I have to say that I am most pleased when they speak so loudly to another soul that that person has to bring me home to continue our conversation for years to come.
For the last 18 years, I've been a teacher, too. I have all the joys of being able to step back from what I do, and think through the principles I've recognized and the pathways I've wandered. And then to offer those insights to others to help them bring out their own mental images for the rest of us to share.

Cindy Kane (American, 1957-) grew up in Washington DC during the Vietnam War era, absorbing the period's powerful political climate. She is a self-taught artist whose multi media work is born out of a deep sense of connection to the political and environmental issues of our times.
Her early work was influenced by the experience of living and working at the bottom of the Grand Canyon National Park, where she had the opportunity to document Anasazi Indian pictographs in pen and ink drawings. These images would inform her work for years to come.
She draws on personal narrative and experience to create her paintings of maps, birds, toys, and artifacts from nature, often collaging bits of newspaper headlines, pieces of her children's homework, and pages of sheet music beneath layers of color and imagery.
In a review of her work, author and critic John Loughery wrote; "Kane leads us into a peculiar netherworld, a hard to place area that's both reassuringly ancient, and anxiously modern. This is a painter who is interested in the unconscious and the archetypal, and utilizes her own private, (but not inaccessible) vocabulary and imagery."

Untitled, 20th century
Oil on canvas

Framed: 31 2/3 x 37 3/4 x 1 1/2 in.
Signed lower right: Claire Burch
After attending grade school in Brooklyn, Burch completed a commercial art course at Washington Irving High School in Manhattan and received her B.A. in English from NYU. In the suburbs of Great Neck, New York, she first began writing poetry and articles which were published in Life magazine, The New Republic, Mademoiselle, McCall's, Saturday Review, Redbook, Good Housekeeping, and numerous literary quarterlies and anthologies.[1] Burch also developed a career as a psychiatric writer, publishing two books on the subject: Careers in Psychiatry and Stranger in the Family.
In the early 1970s Burch became a playwright and painter. Her play Ten Cents a Dance was optioned to be directed by José Quintero, the famous O'Neill interpreter. Burch wrote a total of seven plays and several folk operas, but eventually moved on to filmmaking and video anthropology—she was an early adapter of video as a medium.
In 1978, Burch moved to California with her longtime companion Mark Weiman, publisher and owner of Berkeley's Regent Press. She had endured a series of illnesses and wanted to escape the harsh climate of Manhattan.
Burch gained insight and inspiration from insanity and the often unexpected behavior associated with it. She would often videotape homeless people in People's Park and Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, which were collected in her film People's Park in Berkeley: Then and Now. The film documented the dispute between homeless activists and the University of California from the riots of 1969 through 1996 by interviewing park "regulars," and profiling the events surrounding the deaths of park supporters James Rector and Rosebud Denovo.[2]
She also produced documentaries on noted cultural figures such as James Baldwin (whom she knew as a teenager), Timothy Leary and Country Joe McDonald. Also of note was Oracle Rising, a film about the legendary psychedelic newspaper The SF Oracle published in the Haight-Ashbury district during the Summer of Love. Her last completed film was Elegy for the Naked Guy...

Red Hammond (American)

Oil on canvas
65 1/4 x 53 1/2 x 1 1/2 in.
Signed, dated, and inscribed verso
Artist statement sourced from Red Hammond's website:
ORIGINALITY
As an artist I put myself into the piece of art not to achieve originality for its own sake, but to be honest to, to follow the work. Immersion in the making ensures that the work will be authentic -.that its uniqueness allows the work to emanate its own light, encouraging the viewer to look and to see. While not initially apparent, my paintings typically have numerous, subtle inflections that are often hidden at first glance because the large primary, usually black forms, are strong and register first.
SHAPES AND EMOTIONS
I place significant emphasis on my ability to invent personal shapes. When put together, they establish a dialogue within the painting. I start without any preconceived idea for the painting and do not work from drawing in order to maintain the spontaneity and challenge to work through a solution - to remain fresh and capable of creating surprises for both myself and the viewer. Working instinctually, , I grope around, figuring out how the feelings I have manifest themselves in a specific shape or shapes and how to achieve the overall mood I’m searching for in a particular piece.
SYMBOLS AND MEANING
I build a painting with symbols that go beyond words, creating works that may appear somewhat opaque, mysterious, at times. This encourages engagement on the part of the viewer and allows each viewer to arrive at their own ideas concerning the works’ meaning. Viewers of art often confuse subject matter with content. A cow in a field is a cow in a field - that is subject matter. Content is what the artist puts in of him or herself. That is an intangible that is difficult to decipher. I find the early work of the American abstract expressionists and the artifacts and ritual art of indigenous peoples and tribal cultures to be inspirations.
COMPLETION
Often I’m sure that I have completed a painting and for that moment in time I probably have. Sometimes, however, hours, days or several years later, I look at again and realize that while I was correct for that moment, the painting’s potential was never realized. So I begin the process of working that painting again, and this process can go on for years until I’ve finally got the painting to where it needs to be in order for it to be fully realized.
ART AS THERAPY AND DISCOVERY
Like life, art is not just about self-improvement but also about self-discovery. If I’m not working on getting better as a painter, improving my paint application or pushing myself to expand my limits as a person, I feel I’m letting myself down and falling short of my potential as an artist. Each day in the studio is a mini-metaphor for life that demands and rewards patience.… Without it, I end up with a big...

In his paintings and cut-paper sculptures, Katsumi Hayakawa evokes the city and urban planning. He builds meticulously constructed objects with cubes and squares, suggesting skyscrapers and city grids, while the interaction of line and color coalesce with the cubes to create complex and vibrant rhythms. Hayakawa expands modernist explorations into the grid, in particular evoking Piet Mondrian’s Broadway Boogie Woogie...

Ross Bleckner (American, b. 1949)
Untitled, c. 20th century

Ross Bleckner grew up in Hewlett, Long Island, New York; drawing all the time without being aware that other artists existed. He was the middle child between two sisters; his father manufactures electronic parts He attended New York University where Sol Lewitt, Chuck Close and others were his teachers. He graduated in 1972, then spent a year at the California Institute of Arts. His contacts in the next few years were very fortuitous; Sol Lewitt and Chuck Close, Carl Andre, David Salle, Julian Schnabel, etc.
Bleckner is on the nervous side, beset by self-doubt, insomnia, and gloom. He is unpretentious, although he is bluntly handsome, with olive complexion, and a compact build. He is "10 percent that is superficial and 90 percent that has to do with the depths and that is threatened by living. He is a very complicated individual. He is a very, very morose, deeply feeling, hardworking artist- he takes a lot from within himself - but always, no matter how successful he is, he feels he is going to fall into those depths." 1
Bleckner first exhibited his work in New York in 1974. The following year he was given his first one-man show; he was included in the 1975 Whitney Biennial.. Since about 1985 has addressed many of his paintings to the subject of AIDS- both documenting it as a historical phenomenon and commemorating specific individuals who have died.

Excerpt from interview with Voyage LA: "I studied theater design at New York University but always wanted to be a painter. The painting I was drawn to make was a hybrid of both painting and sculpture. My first one man show in New York were abstract paintings covered in sand. My second one may show in New York were paintings on chalkboards with texts. I’ve had one man shows in Zurich, Tokyo, and Istanbul. Afterward, I felt stuck; an artist’s block had come over me. I turned my attention to raising my daughter and focusing on her becoming an artist. Julia Adolphe is now a successful contemporary classical composer...
