Early 20thC Watercolor and Gouache. 'Gentlemen at the Races, Point to Pointing'.
By Sir Alfred James Munnings
Located in Cotignac, FR
Early 20th century watercolour of a gentleman on horseback with other riders in the background apparently signed or titled 'Count A de Monthaus'. Signed or titled bottom left. Presented in fine period gilt frame under glass.
The artist has captured a moment of pause, the gentlemen rider in his fine clothes and bowler hat regarding his surroundings as his fellow riders continue the chase behind him, possibly a 'point to point'. Monthaus has captured the stance of the standing horse as well as the movement of the other horses. He has used white to give light and definition to the costume of the rider and the background. A lovely atmospheric and dynamic watercolour very much of its period and in the spirit of equine portraiture made famous by the likes of Sir Alfred Munnings.
Sir Alfred James Munnings, KCVO PRA RI (8 October 1878 – 17 July 1959) was known as one of England's finest painters of horses, and as an outspoken critic of Modernism. Engaged by Lord Beaverbrook's Canadian War...

In Japan, they are known as Nishikigoi, or living jewels. These brilliantly colored varieties of the Amur carp have been selectively bred by family owned fisheries for generations. When I began this series of Gyotaku (Japanese fish printing) I studied the many varieties of Koi, each with their own unique colors and patterns. To create these pieces I print common carp I catch myself with sumi ink using traditional techniques used by Japanese fisherman...

A charming illustration by California artist, Angela Stone (American, b. 1983), of a scene with three woodland animals - a fox, a bear, and a deer - cuddled up together on an armchair reading a book titled, "Mushroom Magic." A cat sleeps below the three in a basket full of yarn.
The detailed ink gives such depth and texture to the artwork with patterns, stippling, and shading. The interior of the cabin gives an old-fashioned Alpine chic...

"Natalie's" - Plein Aire Pastoral Landscape in Pastel on Sandpaper
Located in Soquel, CA
"Natalie's" - Plein Aire Pastoral Landscape in Pastel on Sandpaper
Serene plein aire landscape with cows by Clive R. Tyler (American, b. 1958). This composition depicts a farm in Fort Collins, Colorado, with a large white barn at the top of the hill. There are several cows grazing in a bright green pasture. A partially broken fence is directly in front of the viewer - a symbol of the artist's desire to portray the realism of the scene, including imperfections. This piece is executed on sandpaper, a trademark of Tyler's work.
Signed "CL Tyler" in the lower left corner
Signed, notated, titled, and dated on verso (see photo).
Presented in a silver colored frame.
Frame size: 11.25"H x 14"W
Paper size: 9.5"H x 12"W
Clive R. Tyler (American, b. 1958) studied Fine Art and Design at Kent State University (Ohio) with a double major and was awarded a Bachelor of Fine Art degree. Twenty years later after a successful design career, he is now known as one of the best Pastelists on a national level.
