A large and graceful carved nephrite jade conjoined double vase in the form of a pair of Buddha's hands fruit (finger citron), late Qing Dynasty, circa 1900, China. The large and heavy vase carved from a single piece of celadon nephrite jade, with areas of lighter brown "sugar" skin. The vase ingeniously carved as a pair of Buddha's hand fruit, also known as finger citron, rising from a gnarled, leafy branch. The smaller Buddha's hand with a pair of bats. The Buddha's hands fruit with elegant and naturalistic curved "fingers". The "fingers wonderfully shaped and reticulated. The body of the fruit with simple stippling, in imitation of the textured surface of the real fruit. The interior of each fruit well hollowed and able to hold water. Buddha's hands fruit are auspicious in Chinese culture. Their name in Chinese "Fo Shou" is a homophone for "Happiness and Longevity. They are often placed as offerings on Buddhist altars...

Large and impressive Japanese influenced vase by Haeger. This vessel is from the 1980s and has a bulbous form with a slightly irregular opening and is finished in a charcoal black matte and metallic bronze colored drip glaze. Retains the original label on the bottom - Haeger, American Made, 4416. About Haeger Potteries, from Collectors Weekly: Founded in 1871 as the Dundee Brickyard, Haeger Potteries was one of the leading American manufacturers of art pottery, jardinieres, and figurines. Beyond bricks, its first products appeared around the turn of the century in the form of red flower pots for florists. By 1912, Haeger Potteries was offering customers multiple lines of what it called "artware," some influenced by an Arts and Crafts aesthetic (its buttress-handle vases come to mind), others hearkening back to forms developed by the ancient Greeks and given evocative names like Adam and Eve. One of the biggest changes in the company's fortunes occurred in 1938, when a designer named Royal Hickman was hired by Haeger. Hickman focused on Haeger's artware, a line that was quickly named Royal Haeger, presumably to capitalize on Hickman's reputation but also to imitate the names of potteries in England such as Royal Albert and Royal Doulton. The figurines produced by Royal Haeger, the most famous of which was Hickman's black panther from 1941, were a smash with customers, as was the company's white gazelle, whose style appeared to straddle Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern. Subsequent designers such as Eric Olsen added to the Royal Haeger legacy—his muscular red bull was introduced in 1955. Throughout its history, Haeger also made lamps, from models designed for tables and desks during the Art Deco era to its popular TV lamps of the 1950s. In fact, the Mid-Century Modern tendency runs strong in Haeger; collectors of vintage Haeger know that ceramists such Sascha Brastoff got their start working for the firm. Another Gem Japan, a fine substantial 11" tall antique monumental green and blue gourd shaped vase with unusual blue egg plant decoration glazed in rich deep green, blue, and brown colored crackled drip glazes. It was crafted by the master artisans of the Japanese southern Awaji Kiln, from the late Meiji to Taisho period (1910s-1920s). The impressive porcelain vase crafted in a classic wabi sabi modernist form with an original multi glazed finish. It is unsigned as many normally were from that period and is in original condition with normal kiln origination surface creation imperfections on bottom. Dimensions: 11 inches tall and 5.5 inches diameter.. Provenance: private north west coast collection. Undoubtedly influenced by the modernist movement and more likely by the visit to the Awaji kilns by the noted English designer Christopher Dresser of Linthorpe Art Pottery...
