Antique Chinese Carved Soapstone Spill Vase

About the Item

An exceptionally hand-carved antique Chinese soapstone spill vase - spill holder (see below), profusely decorated and intricately detailed naturalistic sculpture form featuring bird feeding on vine, foliage wrapped urn with single well basin, having pierced openwork and engraved motif ornamentation. Spill vases were used from around the late 15th century to the late 19th / early 20th century. Usually kept on the fireplace mantel and filled with splints or spills (tightly rolled paper tapers or very thin wood sticks) used to transfer fire from a lit fire to candles, oil lamps, wood burning stove, a pipe or cigar. Commercial matches, which first appeared in England during the 1820s, were a relatively expensive commodity until the late 19th century, and spill was therefore a more cost effective solution. From 1860 to 1865 there was a huge transitional period in the evolution of lighting and accessories. Later, with the advent and spread of electricity, spill vases gradually became unnecessary, as people relied less on fire for lighting. Today, spill vases are highly collectible and sought after. This superb example, with outstanding design elements, mellow coloring and warmth, unique texture, shape and sculpted form, is ready to begin its second life on a desk as a pen holder or inkwell, mantelpiece as a match stand, or displayed as a scarce curiosity, authentic Asian artifact, or simply beautiful decorative object, sure to add sophisticated cultural interest and conversational intrigue to any space!
