Antique French Aubusson Rug, circa 1890, 8' x 9'
Located in New York, NY
Antique French Aubusson rug, circa 1890. Aubusson carpets are pile less and tapestry woven from that town to the southwest of Paris, by a group of independent weavers working under Royal or State protection. The designs are strictly classical, neoclassical or Victorian. They are virtually never “oriental”. The pattern wefts are wool with silk and/or metal thread for details in the more finely woven examples. Sizes tend toward the squarish and pieces 30’ by 30’ are not unknown. The 18th-19th century French clients included the nobility and haute bourgeoisie. Aubusson carpets were also exported to England and are often to be found in country houses. Light colors are the most popular and dark toned pieces are very rare. Besides traditional Louis furniture...

Vintage Persian Afshar Rug Carpet 5'7 x 9'9
Located in New York, NY
Vintage Persian Afshar rug carpet, 5'7 x 9'9. The antique tribal rugs of the Afshar tribe are woven primarily in southwest Persia and come in a bewildering variety of designs, some indigenous, some adapted from other tribes or urban sources. Normally they are in scatter sizes, 3-4 feet by 5-7 feet, with a few room size carpets. Afshar rugs may be symmetrically or asymmetrically knotted, on cotton or wool foundations. Similarly, the attractive color schemes range from light to dark, ivory to navy. The informal, but charming, patterns may be medallions, arabesques, allover textile designs or abstract geometric motives. A few Afshars are located in Azerbaijan province, northwest Persia. The Afshars originated in Central Asia and came to Persia in the 18th century with the conqueror Nader Shah.

Antique Turkish Oushak Rug 8'8 x 11'6
Located in New York, NY
Antique Turkish Oushak Rug 8'8 x 11'6. Oushak's are known for their soft palettes combined with eccentric drawing. Oushak in western Turkey has the longest continuous rug weaving history, stretching back at least to the mid-fifteenth century. It has always been oriented commercially, supplying rugs and carpets, from scatters up to enormous mansion sizes, to both the Turkish/Ottoman domestic markets and to exports into Britain, and America. The best-known family portrait of George Washington has an Oushak beneath the Founder and his family. Doesn’t get more esteemed than that. Of course, the carpets have constantly changed as tastes, trends, styles, and markets evolved. In the late 19th/early 20th centuries, Persian or Persianate patterns were adopted, and dimensions mutated into Western room sizes. From the early years of the Ottoman Empire to the end of the 13th century, Oushak became an important center of Turkish carpet production. All this changed after the mid-nineteenth century, when Oushak became a major manufacturing center again due to the extensive revival of Turkish and Persian Oriental carpet production. The large and growing middle class in Europe and the United States suddenly created a new demand for oriental antique carpets, and like many other historic carpet manufacturing centers today, Oushak has rapidly developed to meet this demand. At the end of the 19th century, the production of Oriental carpets resumed, during which time Oushak once again became an outstanding center of the textile industry. This center is credited with many of the great masterpieces of early Turkish carpet weaving from the 15th to 17th centuries. Oushak was one of the largest cities in Anatolia and became one of the central carpet weaving centers from the 15th to the 20th century. The luxurious quality of the wool (for which Oushak's have always been famous) contributed to the vibrancy of the colors. Unlike most Turkish rugs, Oushak rugs were heavily influenced by Persian design. Many depictions of ancient oriental carpets in old western paintings appear to be styles designed and woven in Oushak. Many people look at Oushak rugs for their history and ancient value, but even in today's world of carpet weaving, there are countless Oushak rugs that truly convey the original aesthetic and sense of timeless ancient design. You will fall in love with our Oushak rugs, featuring bold floral designs and many other antique details. Originating in the city of Oushak in central western Anatolia, Turkish Oushak rugs display a mesmerizing Persian influence, making them one of the most popular types of antique rugs...

Simplicity Comfort Pink Turquoise Contemporary Handwoven Rug 6' x 9'9
Located in New York, NY
Simplicity Comfort Pink Turquoise Contemporary Handwoven Rug. Size: 8' x 9'9. We call this our “Simplicity” Line, but a closer look reveals that it is not so simple. Yes, we have eliminated borders, yes the pattern is infinite, yes it is purely geometric. But no, it is not a simple creation at all. The basic layout is a gridwork of single- and double-lines crossing singles, to make squares and rectangles. But each line or panel is its own little abrash technique. The weavers have worked dozens of related colors into each square inch. Nothing repeats exactly. Blues, greys, browns, beiges, straws, creams are all in harmony in the blend of viscose and wool pile on cotton foundations. There are hundreds of colors, dashed, broken, blurred, mixed. The rug is a kind of fractal, with each area, no matter how small, containing variations within, which, in turn, bear smaller variations which, in turn bear still smaller ones… etc. A subtle and random pile relief effect has been added: some lines are raised, some adjacent color areas are lower, but there is no plan. Not really simple at all. How about comfort? Comfortable to the eyes and touch, to the soul with nothing strident or demanding. Your soul does not have to work hard, or even work at all, to be comfortable. The rug envelops you in comfort and not every rug can do that. The Simplicity Comfort line...

Vintage Persian Kirman Rug 5'1 x 8'10
Located in New York, NY
Vintage Persian Kirman rug. Size: 5'1 x 8'10. This attractive and tonally muted Kirman from southeast Persia was woven when densely covered grounds were particularly popular. The field color is a soft light teal with accents of dark brown, old gold, ivory and light green. The main border is equally filled with flowering vines and other elements repeating those of the field. Almost randomly, motives outlined in dark brown seem to drift in and out of focus. The all-over pattern has rosettes, leaves and layers of vines. The color variation or abrash is fairly subtle and is not the usual horizontal band variety, all too obvious in carpets with diverse dye lots. The soft, almost feminine palette makes this rug ideal for a boudoir, dressing room or bed chamber...
