Titled: Calabash Hand signed, dated and titled. Sheila Elias (born in Chicago, Illinois) is an American artist. Her work is Neo Expressionist, Feminist Pop Art. Her works have been featured in exhibitions across North America and at the Liberty show at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Elias graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago, lives and works in Miami, Florida and in New York City. As an artist and art historian, Elias works with the layers of life and art history, seeking in it a connection between art aesthetics and social consciousness. She has exhibited with diverse artists, Larry Rivers, Bob Stanley, Ford Crull, Sol LeWitt, Mark Tobey, Walter Darby Bannard, Clyde Butcher. Her work spans the disciplines of painting, digital mixed media, sculpture, installation and performance. Her inspiration to be an artist began with the work that Matisse created (La Cirque) in the library of the Art Institute of Chicago. Paul Wieghardt (from the Bauhaus School in Germany), was her art teacher at SAIC. She was influenced by the Marisol, Claes Oldenburg and Jean Dubuffet. Her sculptures also reveal the influence of Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg. We also have a work from her Pompidou Series (1979-1981) built around the X in the raw, exposed architecture of the Centre Georges Pompidou in the center of Paris designed by Richard Rodgers and Renzo Piano. His artworks explore issues of memory, and his own experiences, while also dwelling in issues of nature, the environment and matters of beauty, identity and communication. He has worked as a curator, furniture designer and has collaborated in with Louis Vuitton as well as on architectural and site-specific private and public commissions with architect Alberto Latorre. At home her father, a professor, and mother, a state economist and homemaker, collected nineteenth and twentieth century drawings and prints, Middle eastern rugs, and ceramics, pewter, and old tools. Her grandfather, Max Westfield, was an academically trained portrait painter and her great uncle was a well-known gallery owner and art dealer in pre-World War II Germany. One of the influential experiences of Joan’s youth was visiting her grandfather in his studio in Tennessee where the family had first immigrated. Growing up near New York, and spending a year in Paris during high school, provided formative visits to museums and galleries. Joan was academically talented in grade and high school, but after her father’s death during her first years at university she found herself concentrating on studio and history of art. It was a subject above others absorbed and concentrated her focus. Influential in Joan’s development and later work are the historic movements of the Bauhaus and Modernist design and architecture, geometric art and design of diverse cultures, Color Field Painting. Beauchamp's paintings and drawings are known for depicting dramatic creatures and figures with expressionistic colors. His work was described in the New York Times as being "both frightening and amusing,". He was a Guggenheim Fellow and a student of Hans Hofmann. Robert Beauchamp was born in Denver, Colorado in 1923. He had three brothers and three sisters, and the children were orphaned by both parents by the time Beauchamp was three. The family grew up impoverished due to the Great Depression, living in a community house with other families. As a child he dabbled in art but it wasn't until high school that he began taking art classes. When not creating art he also played sports; football and basketball, and enjoyed chemistry and geology. He was told he was good at drawing, and replaced study hall classes with art classes, receiving instruction and inspiration from a Welsh teacher named R. Idris Thomas. Was born 1932, U.S.A. and immigrated to Israel 1963 after living in Spain, France and Greece. Studies: 1953-55 with Kimura Kyoen whilst serving with the U.S.Army in Japan; 1955-61 Institute of Fine Arts, with Philip Guston; New York University. Larry Abramson, who is very much in the mainstream of Israeli art, curated an exhibition of Schwebel’s work at the Jerusalem Print Workshop in the early 1980s; in the accompanying text, he described him as “an artist from the New York School ship-wrecked on a hill near Jerusalem.” IN SCHWEBEL’S BEST WORK, THE paint speaks for itself: the pools and explosions of rich color, achieved with pigment that he would grind and mix himself, the luminous figures emerging out of dark shadows, the quirky, dramatic compositions. Schwebel was erudite, with a passion for the bible and Jewish and Israeli history. He delved into all of it for his subject matter, bringing together characters and narratives regardless of time, and setting them in modern- day Tel Aviv or Jerusalem, the Judean hills, or New York City. He liked to play with ideas, and thoroughly mixed his visual metaphors. He showed David and Bat-Sheva next to a Nazi deportation train, and Job despairing over his relationship with the Palestinians. He based his characters on photographs of himself, friends and family, or movie stars. On his website, he describes a series of paintings about anti-Semitism in which the Holocaust is merged with the Spanish Inquisition: “Abarbanel who tried to negotiate with Ferdinand and Isabella is reincarnated in Rumkowski – the German appointed Head of the Lodz Ghetto. The bridge connecting two parts of the Ghetto is spanned over a present-day Tel Aviv cityscape. He was included in a portfolio that included Ivan Schwebel, Michael Gross, Liliane Klapisch and Moshe Kupferman, five of Israel's leading contemporary artists who were each approached in May 1977 with a request to contribute a hand-printed screenprint for a portfolio to be titled "Jerusalem". The sole term of reference was the name "Jerusalem", with no qualifications at all. The five artists then spent time working completely independently and individually on the project at the Jerusalem Print Workshop. She said that her paintings echo the work of John Marin and Milton Avery. Of her art, Duesberry said, "I am not interested in a realist painting, I am not interested in an abstract painting. I am interested in the tension." Joellyn Duesberry was born on June 30, 1944 in Richmond, Virginia. Growing up in rural Virginia instilled in her a love for the land. She said, "All my life I think I've unconsciously tried to recreate the place where bliss or terror first came to me. Both emotions seemed so strong that I had to locate them outside of myself, in the land. This goes back to a childhood habit of living in rural Virginia and seeking woods and creeks and lakes for solitary refuge; places where I could sketch and paint." She decided to start painting at age ten after being given a pair of red tennis shoes and walking on the beach, inspired by the colorful juxtaposition of sand, shadow, and shoe. Soon thereafter she decided that "Women artists existed and she needed to be among them." She received a BA with Distinction, Phi Beta Kappa, in art history and painting, from Smith College in 1966. In that year she was awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship. While at Smith, she "honed her skills by making countless copies of masterworks." She took her master's degree at New York University Institute of Fine Arts. Despite her degrees, she is considered to be a self-taught artist. Joellyn Duesberry was a plein air painter, who began "her canvases outdoors on an easel and finished] them in the studio, frequently making monotypes in between." She moved to Denver in 1985, and embraced the Colorado landscape in her art. In that year she received an Individual Painting Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to work with Richard Diebenkorn. In 1997, Duesberry won the Benjamin Altman Landscape Prize from the National Academy of Design. While she had a World Views residency with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) from 1998-1999, Duesberry painted city studies in studio space in some vacant offices of the World Trade Center's North Tower. She says that, because of her connection to the World Trade Center, the tone of her painting saddened after 9/11. In 2005, a PBS documentary was made of Joellyn Duesberry's life, work, and creative process titled Joellyn Duesberry: Dialogue with the Artist. Her works are held by institutions such as Metropolitan Museum of Art and Smith College Museum of Art. Publications 1998: A Covenant of Seasons: Monotypes by Joellyn T. Close up of a flower. canvas measures 30 X24 inches. Clarence Skip Measelle has been featured in over 100 gallery and museum exhibitions, competitions, group shows, and solo shows throughout the US. He is best known for his work in photorealism and abstract illusionism. The name Photorealism (also known as Hyperrealism or Superrealism) was coined in reference to those artists whose work depended heavily on photographs, which they often projected onto canvas allowing images to be replicated with precision and accuracy. The exactness was often aided further by the use of an airbrush, which was originally designed to retouch photographs. The movement came about within the same period and context as Conceptual art, Pop art, and Minimalism and expressed a strong interest in realism in art, over that of idealism and abstraction. The first Photo realists were Chuck Close, Don Eddy, Richard Estes, Ralph Goings, Robert Bechtle, Audrey Flack, Denis Peterson, Lowel Nesbitt and Malcolm Morley. Each began practicing some form of Photorealism around the same time, often utilizing different modes of application and techniques, and citing different inspirations for their work. However, for the most part they all worked independent from one another. For example, Chuck Close came of age at the height of Pop art and Andy Warhol's Factory, and was based out of SoHo in lower Manhattan. We have not examined out of frame. Patrick LoCicero was born in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1959. He attended Youngstown State University, Ohio, and the Columbus College of Art and Design. He completed a B.F.A. at Ohio State University in 1982 and an M.F.A. at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1986. His paintings, installations, prints, and multimedia work have been shown in California, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. LoCicero's richly layered imagery is characterized by unusual juxtapositions of everyday objects and classical motifs, which play with the viewer's perception of materials and subjects. LoCicero’s assemblage paintings combine collage with painting. The overlap and collage elements relate directly to the images he depicts, guiding him in his choice of subjects, and come from a variety of sources including the Kama Sutra, antique children’s books, letters and journals. His still life paintings resonate due to the contrast the artist sets up between the collaged surface and the painted surface, as well as the play between the actual shallow space and implied deep space. Patrick specializes in creating mixed-media collages that tell stories. Collage paintings inventively reinterpret the collage technique that developed during the Cubist Dada era, and he reinvigorates one of the most important modes of expression in the art of the 20th Century. Nina Karasek (Joële) born 1883 Kuttenberg, Czech Lands, Austro-Hungarian Empire, died in 1952 (I have also seen the date recorded as 1933) Vienna, Austria. Nina Karasek was an Austrian Impressionist & Modern artist who was born in 1883. Her work was featured in exhibitions at the Es Baluard, Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art and the Bildraum Bodensee. Little is known of Nina Karasek's life. She was born in 1883 in Kuttenberg (Kutná Hora) in Bohemia, studied art at the Kunstschule für Frauen und Mädchen (Art School for Women and Girls) in Vienna, Austria, under Adalbert Seligmann and Tina Blau. She studied at the Frauenakademie in Vienna and Munich. In the 1920's she worked first as a landscape painter and an illustrator, later turning toward symbolism, painting mystical subjects after her interest in spiritualism. Her conventional works were shown at various exhibitions. At the age of 44, while she was copying a work by Rembrandt in an Italian museum, she fell into an altered state of consciousness. Rembrandt appeared to her, took possession of her arm, and immediately her hand started to draw something quite different from what she had intended. From then on, for the rest of her life Nina Karasek was in “supernatural” contact with a series of great masters like Rembrandt, Albrecht Dürer, Goya, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Gustav Klimt and others. Under their guidance and inspiration, she drew and painted works "in the style" of the masters. But very soon her works became stylistically more and more unrestricted and Symbolist, showing an enormous range of creative expression, ranging from symbolic and allegorical motifs to bewildering images with a fantastic arsenal of figures and private characters, signs, and symbols, and to frantic, gestural sketches and abstract compositions. From then on, she often signed her works with her esoteric “primordial name” Joële. (Nina Karasik-Joel) Almost everything we know about her life was from what she noted on the reverse of her drawings: sometimes diary-like notes of her horrible living conditions during World War II, but often strangely impenetrable explanations of the depicted motifs – often as fascinating and mysterious as the drawings themselves. In her works and notes, an exciting private cosmology and mythology unfolds, a drama of hidden powers and principles that flow through macrocosm as well as microcosm. Shortly after their discovery, Nina Karasek's Spiritualist, mediumistic works have found their way into galleries and major international collections. For Brooklyn born, Israeli artist Yitzhak Greenfield, these visions are the essence of the Jerusalem landscape, inspired by the city’s ever-changing magical scenery. For generations, Jerusalem has been a focal point for the Jewish people. It is the center of Jewish life, faith, hope, history, and consciousness. Jerusalem holds a particular significance for Greenfield, who moved to Ein Kerem, Jerusalem over fifty years ago, after living on a kibbutz. Greenfield is a Jerusalem artist, and he remarks: “Living and working in Jerusalem is a special journey for me. My works are visionary landscapes, which are reconstructions of Jerusalem, not always relating to specific sites.” The artist has always been intrigued by the historical and dynamic nature of the city, as he constantly explores his own connection to the traditional and spiritual forms of Judaism. Greenfield’s art is linked to Jewish and Israeli history and symbols, such as the Hebrew letters, Jewish amulets, and the Ten Sephirot (Kabbalah emanations), containing aesthetic qualities of the material and the spiritual. Working in a distinctive modernist method, Greenfield’s artwork lends itself to rich possibilities of expression. The exhibition Yitzhak Greenfield: Exploring Jerusalem comprises three main series from the artist’s career, which span over the course of many years and continue to this day; Jerusalem Visions, Jerusalem Assemblages, and Landscape and Meditation on the Hebrew Letter. These artworks portray timeless dream-landscapes of Jerusalem. Frame is 12 X 10. Canvas is 9.5 X 7.5 Calogero was born August 20, 1922 in Catania, Sicily. Self-taught Surreal Artist First exhibitions in 1945 in Sicily and Rome were very successful. He arrived in Paris in 1947 and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He is best known for his Surrealism and genre works. His paintings are dreamlike and visionary. They travel to an infinite space created by the artist through his memories, the sky and the sea so dear to him. In his paintings there are a few common themes: the masks with their dual dimensions that hide or shows only what you want, the profiles of the women, and the horsemen, drawn as the Sicilian tradition requires. He exhibited at the Gallery Hervé in 1951 and the following year he went to New York to present his show, then in 1953 he was invited to Los Angeles, where he returned two years later, and from where he regularly exhibited his works, and San Francisco. In 1954, Maximilien Gauthier devoted a book to him published by "The Gemini." The first exhibition in Japan was in 1965. He was awarded the Grand Silver Medal by the City of Paris in 1957. Calogero had countless exhibitions in Paris, in the fifties, plus the American exhibitions in New York (Associated American Artists, 1952), Los Angeles (James Vigevano Galleries, 1953) and then later in Japan and in major galleries in Italy. In 1929 he participated for the first time at a collective exhibition in Bucharest and in 1933 he had his first personal exhibition (in the same city). In the early '30s he was a member of the Surrealist group "unu" (meaning "one"). In 1942, he left Romania in a boat with 12 other Jews, including Theodor Brauner, the brother of Victor Brauner. After being captured by British authorities in Cyprus, he managed to reach Palestine in 1944. In 1949 he went to live in Jerusalem, where he was active in developing ceramic arts, sculpture works in copper, and artistic tapestry wall hangings under the auspices of the Ministry of Trade and Industry. Together with Marcel Janco, he founded in Israel the artist village known as Ein Hod. He also gained much reputation as a muralist and graphic and poster designer, having designed numerous posters and other works for the El Al air company, Maccabiah games, Zim shipping and The Israel tourist industry. David’s primary importance was in the design of posters. He used a wildly colorful decorative style in his art, which combined illustration, caricature, and national figures. In addition he designed wall hangings for “Maskit,” and also worked in the decoration of public buildings. His paintings had elements of Surrealism and included images from nature and landscapes. Jean Chaleye is known for Landscape, still life and coastal view painting. Considered one of the most important Post Impressionist painters. Jean-Baptiste Chaleye, known as Joannès Chaleyé, was born to working class parents in Saint Etienne in the middle of the 19th Century. He began his career as a commercial engraver at the age of fourteen, which he continued until 1899 when he took a trip to England. He returned the following year to do his military service and on completion returned to the city of his birth. He began his artistic training in Saint Etienne and then at the School of Fine Arts in Lyon in 1896. He was then offered the opportunity to complete his training in Paris. In 1899, he joined the class of Louvrier de Lajolais at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and was also a student of Fernand Cormon at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Through Cormon he me Andre Derain, Mary Cassatt and Dunoyer de Segonzac and a number of ther Barbizon painters influenced by Edouard Manet. Jean Chaleye's life is divided between his attraction for painting and his passion for the art of lace. As early as 1902, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français and the Salon des indépendants. As a renowned painter of flowers, several museums acquired his paintings such as the cities of Puy-en-Velay, Lyon, Clermont-Ferrand and Saint-Gall in Switzerland. In 1903, Louvrier de Lajolais offered him to go to the provinces to teach the art of lacemaking at the École pratique de commerce et d'industrie du Puy-en-Velay. He then set out to replace the traditional geometric and repetitive designs by creations with supple and light forms, inspired by local flora. He devoted his entire life to highlighting the delicate art of lace making, participating in various competitions and international exhibitions during which he won several awards. Appointed director of the National Superior School of Arts and Textile Industries of Roubaix in 1930 but also artistic director of the school of laces of Bailleul, he favors the obtaining by this last one of the Grand Prix at the Exhibition of Brussels in 1935. Promoted to the rank of officer of the Legion of Honor in 1937, his involvement in the recognition of the know-how of the Velay lace industry is recognized. A renowned painter, one recognizes in his paintings as in his lace drawings all the delicacy and the love which he carries to the flowers and to the nature in general. He died in 1960 in Puy-en-Velay. After his death, the house in which he had lived in Puy was turned into the Musée Chaleyé. International exhibitions In 1904, he had the "Lace" section participate in the exhibition at the Galliera Museum in Paris, which presented the lace made according to his ideas. In 1905, he created the fan leaf for the lacemaker Oudin, which was purchased by the Saint-Gall Museum in Switzerland. He participated in various international competitions and exhibitions, during which he received several awards: International Exhibition of Liège (1905): he created a fan leaf decorated with Virginia creeper which took part in this exhibition. French Lace Competition (1907): the “Lace” section, the work of which he directed, won three distinctions: first prize (1000 Francs), second prize in collaboration, and for his personal work, the prize of the Under-Secretary of State for Fine Arts. Franco-British Exhibition in London (1908): gold medal for a braid of fuchsias signed by Chaleyé. Brussels World's Fair (1910): a grand prize was won by three laces signed by Chaleyé (landscape with grisaille effect, a cockfight in colour and a cushion with chestnut decorations with spider webs). Chaleyé also won a gold medal for his collaboration. International Exhibition in Turin (1911): he had produced new drawings which had earned him a gold medal for his collaboration. International Exhibition of Lyon (1914): he was awarded a medal for his collaboration. Participation in the “Lace” and “Cabinetmaking” sections, of which Chaleyé directed the work and designed the models for this exhibition. Painting by Jean Chaleyé exhibited at the Crozatier Museum in Puy-en-Velay Alongside his artistic involvement in lacemaking, he exhibited his paintings at the Salon des artistes français from 1902. At the Salon des indépendants, one of his works was selected by the Commission des beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris and several museums have acquired his paintings: the cities of Le Puy, Lyon, Clermont-Ferrand, Saint-Gall (Switzerland). Seven of them are still exhibited at the Musée Crozatier in Puy-en-Velay. A renowned painter of flowers, he enjoyed his main successes in the Lyon and Saint-Etienne regions where he exhibited mainly. Self-taught Surreal Artist First exhibitions in 1945 in Sicily and Rome were very successful. He arrived in Paris in 1947 and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He is best known for his Surrealism and genre works. His paintings are dreamlike and visionary. They travel to an infinite space created by the artist through his memories, the sky and the sea so dear to him. In his paintings there are a few common themes: the masks with their dual dimensions that hide or shows only what you want, the profiles of the women, and the horsemen, drawn as the Sicilian tradition requires. He exhibited at the Gallery Hervé in 1951 and the following year he went to New York to present his show, then in 1953 he was invited to Los Angeles, where he returned two years later, and from where he regularly exhibited his works, and San Francisco. In 1954, Maximilien Gauthier devoted a book to him published by "The Gemini." The first exhibition in Japan was in 1965. He was awarded the Grand Silver Medal by the City of Paris in 1957. Calogero had countless exhibitions in Paris, in the fifties, plus the American exhibitions in New York (Associated American Artists, 1952), Los Angeles (James Vigevano Galleries, 1953) and then later in Japan and in major galleries in Italy.
