The gemstone at the centre of this opal ring is an Australian pipe boulder opal from Opal Minded's own opal mines in Jundah-Opalville in Queensland. This gem is particularly exciting for its size and brightness. Jundah-Opalville opal fields are known in the opal industry for the outstanding quality of pipe opal they (occasionally) reveal. Pipe boulder opal is an organic-matter-replacement opal that forms in iron-ore bearing rocks. Its distinctive quality is the "play of colour" present in mostly translucent gem material, a phenomenon which manifests in opal's colours shifting and changing as the gem moves. Australian opals, in general, are the quality benchmark for the world family of opals owing to their durability and beauty. This particular opal is transparent and attached naturally to the host rock in which it was found.
