Essay
Exhibited in plaster at the Salon of 1882 (no. 4331), Dumaige's statue of Camille Desmoulins has become well-regarded as one of his most powerful compositions. The original was given by Dumaige to the Musée de Rouen. It captures Desmoulins delivering his powerful and poignant call to arms before the Bastille storming, the drama of the scene almost operatic as he knocks the chair over behind him, grasping the loose pages of his speech in his closed fist while he loses himself in the rhetoric.
Camille Desmoulins was a French journalist, lawyer, and revolutionary, recognized for his pivotal role in the French Revolution. Born in Guise, France, he studied law at the Collège Louis-le-Grand in Paris, where he befriended future revolutionary leaders, including Maximilien Robespierre. Desmoulins gained prominence on July 12, 1789, when his impassioned speech at the Palais-Royal incited the storming of the Bastille two days later, marking a critical moment in the Revolution.
As a journalist, Desmoulins founded and edited Les Révolutions de France et de Brabant, a radical publication that criticized the monarchy and aristocracy. His writing was instrumental in shaping revolutionary sentiment, blending incisive political critique with populist rhetoric. Despite his early radicalism, Desmoulins later advocated for moderation during the Reign of Terror, aligning himself with the Dantonist faction. This shift ultimately led to his downfall.

Cast using the lost-wax method the Valsuani foundry was renowned for perfecting, this fine modernist bust showcases loose modeling to create a chaotic surface while articulating an exactiingly realist sense of her sitter. His powerful features and stoic profile evoke a character of great seriousness. The bust is cast hollow and is raised on an early wooden plinth.
Leslie Swan (born Lucile Swan, May 10, 1890, Sioux City, Iowa) was an American sculptor and painter, known for her sensitive and evocative portrayals of human figures, informed by her extensive travels and intellectual exchanges. After receiving early education at an Episcopal boarding school, she moved to Chicago in 1903 and began her studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1908. In 1912, she married fellow artist Jerome Blum. Over the next decade, Swan’s artistic career took her to Corsica, Japan, China, Tahiti, and France, where she immersed herself in the diverse cultures and artistic traditions she encountered.
In 1924, following her divorce, Swan relocated to New York City, where she continued her work as both a painter and sculptor. Five years later, she accepted a significant commission from the Cenozoic Laboratory in Beijing, beginning a transformative period in her career. It was in China that she met the philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, and their friendship would profoundly influence her work and life. Swan's portrait bust of Teilhard, now housed at the Museum of Natural History in Paris, remains one of her most celebrated pieces. She also created a reconstruction of the Sinanthropus skull, a project supervised by German anatomist Franz Weidenreich.
During her time in Beijing, Swan modeled a variety of subjects, from Western intellectuals to local Chinese figures. Her sculptures of children, Chinese jugglers, and sword dancers...

A very finely carved marble bust that almost certainly depicts Lady Layard (British, 1843-1912) at 27 years of age. While the bust is not titled, John Warrington Wood had a relationship with the family, first sculpting Lady Mary Enid Evelyn Layard's husband and cousin Henry Austin Layard the year before in London in 1869. Wood exhibited that bust at the Royal Academy in 1870 and the same year Lady Layard would have sat down with him in Rome for the completion of this bust. Interestingly, Henry Layard decided he did not like the bust that was completed of him and eventually re-commissioned Wood to complete the bust again 12 years later in 1881, that example held in the permanent collection of The National Gallery in London. The same year, John Warrington Wood executed a second bust of Lady Layard that is held in the permanent collection of the British Museum of Art (acc. no. OA.10557). An exceedingly rare cast of J. Clinton Shepherd's study of a Western miner and his pack mule titled "The Desert Rat", it features a tired old-timer with his worn and weathered features trodding along with his pickaxe resting on top of the full pack and a sturdy walking stick in his other hand. The sheer rarity of the cast perhaps is due to the timing of his model, which was modeled in 1928 and started production at Gorham almost in sync with the beginning of the Great Depression. Shepherd saw his income from sculpture dwindle to such a degree that he was forced to begin illustrating thriller novels during the 1930s. The only other model we have seen on the open market was offered at Christie's in New York on November 30th of 1990 (lot 86) with an estimate of $ 10-15,000. An example of this sculpture is recorded in the Smithsonian American Art Museum index of American Art as being preserved in the permanent collection of the University of Delaware (acc. no. 64.2.007); it is also held in the Birmingham Museum of Art (acc. no. 1978.41).
Joy Clinton Shepherd was born on September 11, 1888, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Charles and Emma Shepherd. He was the third of five children, and his family lived on Twenty-third Street. His father, a men's suit salesman, enabled Joy to attend college after high school. Joy studied at the University of Missouri at Kansas City before leaving in 1909 to travel to the Northwest with his brother, where they lived with the Crow Indians and learned their customs.
In 1910, Joy moved to Chicago and enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago where he graduated in 1914. He subsequently studied at the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design and afterwards worked as a freelance artist. He married Gail English, a fellow art student, in 1915. In 1916, he joined the Illinois National Reserve as a bugler. Despite a hearing defect, he served until 1919 when he moved to New York City to work as a freelance artist for magazines like Colliers and The Saturday Evening Post.
Joy adopted the signature "J. C. Shepherd" and found success throughout the 1920s. He and Gail moved to Westport, Connecticut, and had two children, Joy and Charles. In addition to illustration, he pursued a career as a sculptor of western bronzes.
