French Antique Bronze Sculpture “Great Dane” by Georges Gardet
About the Item
GEORGES GARDET
French, 1863-1939
Recumbent Great Dane
Patinated bronze signed in cast "G. GARDET", cold-stamped "865 K" and "FRANCE"
Item # 311KOG07P
A good casting of Gardet's Recumbent Great Dane with a nuanced black-over-medium-brown patination, it is a silky cast with an underlying sensitivity in the modeling that casts a certain bokeh quality over the image.
Gardet modeled these as a pair and also separated them into two separate sculptures, one with the Great Dane looking up expectantly at the owner and the present example with the dog looking off into the distance, paws crossed and in a very peaceful and perhaps even sleepy posture.
Many of these were cast for Gardet by the foundry Siot-Decauville of varying quality and sizes - the present example is the smallest version.
Measurements: 5 1/8" H x 3 1/2" D x 9 1/4" W
Condition Report:
Some handling wear and some relieving of the patina from black to a lighter brown - a portion apparently intentional by the patineur and likely original while some is likely from handling - to the toes, haunches, back and head. Base with rubbing/abrading to the patina by the front left paw and at the back by his belly. Carefully cleaned and sealed in conservator-grade wax.

- French Antique Bronze Sculpture of "Harvester" by Mathurin MoreauBy Mathurin MoreauLocated in Shippensburg, PA"HARVESTER" AFTER A MODEL BY MATHURIN MOREAU (FRENCH, 1822-1912) In a reddish-brown and golden patinated bronze; signed in base "Math. Moreau" Item # 012SKP14W A fine model of a rural young farmer resting against a rocky outcrop to sharpen his scythe, the base of which has been set in the hay collected in a pile beside the rock; the naturalistic base is signed along the back in his typical nearly cursive script "Math. Moreau". It is a complex model and a fine accomplishment for the foundry, the joints seamlessly flowing into one another without any obvious connections. The surface is chiseled with great care, resulting in fine detailing of the toes and fingers to include the wrinkles at each joint and texturing of the nails, crisp eyelids and flawless skin, gorgeous texturing of the garment...Category

- French Antique Bronze Sculpture “Halting Stallion” Horse by Pierre LenordezLocated in Shippensburg, PAPIERRE LENORDEZ French, 1815-1892 A Halting Stallion Patinated sand-cast bronze Signed in cast "P. Lenordez" cast circa 1860 Item # 306GRT17P A rare example of Pierre Lenordez's early work, this fine sand-cast bronze model of a halting stallion showcases the powerful animal as he is stopping his forward motion, rearing slightly as he shifts his weight to his back legs. The model is beautifully chased and a wonderful hammered texture to the hair and texture from the original wax mold replicated in the bronze under the translucent brown surface patina. The model is signed on the back corner of the naturalistic base in his typical script, "P. Lenordez". Born in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, in the district of Manche in northwestern France, Pierre Lenordez eventually established himself in Caen where he would become a professor and teach at the Fine Arts Academy of Caen for a decade, accepting under his tutelage the Romantic sculptor of renown Arthur Jacques Leduc...Category
