Mathilde Schaefer Modern Studio Pot with Horse Motif
By Mathilde Schaefer
Located in Phoenix, AZ
Beautiful and whimsical ceramic vase handmade by celebrated artist Mathilde Schaefer, wife of noted Arizona artist Lew Davis. This unusual and rare terra cotta vase with a glazed turquoise interior (and other glazed portions: manes, tails, hooves and eyes), is dated 1949 on the bottom in pencil and marked "Desert Kilns Arizona." Also inscribed in pencil on the bottom: “Merry Christmas from Bill Benton.” We are not certain who the recipient was but the vase was owned and given as a gift by Bill Benton, a Senator from Connecticut who wintered in Arizona. He was a friend of Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s when Arizona and Phoenix in particular had a very active art community. Known in Arizona in the 1960s as an instructor of pottery and sculpture at the Desert School of Art in Scottsdale and also as the wife of artist Lew Davis, she was born in New York City and studied with Raoul Josset and Walter Lemcke. In 1938, she began exhibiting at the Art Institute of Chicago. She married Davis and they moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where she maintained a studio. Her sculpture is in numerous collections including that of International Business Machines...

Henry Stanier British Born Artist, Beautiful Orientalist Painting, 1859
By Henry Stanier
Located in Phoenix, AZ
Orientalist oil on board by Henry Stanier (1831-1894) in the ornate original frame. Titled “The Narghuileh” and dated 1859. Signed on the verso Stanier and initialed H.S. Titled on the verso in the artist's hand. Measures: 12" H x 9" W inches. Frame measures: 24" H x 21" W The painting is in good condition. Henry Stanier (1831-1894) Stanier was born in Birmingham, England (1831-1894) but lived also in Spain, where he passed away in Granada in 1894. During the 1880s and 1890s Stanier often painted the view from the Mirador de San Nicolas. Inspired by the rich cultural legacy of Granada’s Moorish past, he also produced a number of carefully observed architectural subjects, sometimes incorporating picturesque or exotic figures in an Orientalist vein. Such scenes were occasionally exhibited in London at the Royal Society of British Artists, although it appears that Stanier found a ready market for his work amongst Granada’s passing foreign tourists. As a young artist in his home city of Birmingham, Stanier had been an active exhibitor of flower pieces and historical genre scenes. Later, in the 1860s and 1870s, he painted Egyptian landscapes...

Lowell Nesbitt Oil Painting, Iris on Dark Grey, 1968
By Lowell Nesbitt
Located in Phoenix, AZ
A beautiful example by well-known artist Lowell Nesbitt featuring dramatic pale Irises on a dark grey ground. Image size: 22" H x 34" W. Simply framed. In mint condition. Signed, titled and dated on the Verso. Lowell Nesbitt (1933-1993), was a graduate of the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia and also attended the Royal College of Art in London. In 1964, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington gave him one of his first museum exhibitions. Mr. Nesbitt was frequently grouped with the Photo Realists. Mr. He was best known for gargantuan images or irises, roses, lilies and other flowers, which he often depicted in close up so that their petals seemed to fill the canvas. Dramatic, implicitly sexual and a little ominous, they earned the artist a popularity with the general public that tended to overshadow his reputation within the art world. In 1980, the United States Postal Service issued four stamps based on Mr. Nesbitt's floral paintings. He also served as the official artist for the space flights of Apollo 9 and Apollo 13...

Robert McChesney Watercolor Titled "Investigators"
By Robert McChesney
Located in Phoenix, AZ
Impressive watercolor by California Abstract Impressionist, Robert McChesney (1913-2008). The painting is in excellent condition and measures 21 x 15 inches. The frame is 31 x 24. A label is seen on the verso with the title: "Investigators," and "From the Okinawa Series #47." Signed lower right. McChesney was a wonderful painter and this work is from his best period in my opinion. Post-War California artist, Robert Pearson McChesney became an Abstract Expressionist painter, assemblage artist, printmaker, sculptor and teacher. He was born in Marshall, Missouri, and with the exception of a year in Mexico, 1951, and World War II military service aboard a ship, he spent his career in California where he moved in 1936. He lived and had his studio north of San Francisco in Petaluma, atop Sonoma Mountain. Considered one of the "progenitors of Bay Area abstract expressionism", he had influence far beyond his home town. Exhibition venues were in New York at the Whitney Museum, Chicago at the Art Institute and San Francisco at the Museum of Modern Art. He studied at Washington University School of Fine Arts in St. Louis, Missouri from 1933-1934, and the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles from 1936 to 1937 with Fred...

Brock & Company Tall Sterling Art Nouveau Flower Vase, California Poppy
By Brock & Company
Located in Phoenix, AZ
Brock & Company Sterling Art Nouveau vase - 17 ½ inches tall. Beautiful poppy flower design. Slender stem with attached tendrils. Marked: Brock & Company, Sterling, 7369, 17 ½ in. Beautiful vase in excellent condition. Measures: 17.5" H x 4.75" D. Brock & Company was a nationally-prominent jewelry firm, and it certainly was the most important jewelry and giftware store in Los Angeles. It was considered to be the jewelry store of the stars and was shopped by many notable Los Angeles actors of the day including Mary Pickford and others. It's jewelry workshop was housed in the top floor of the building on West Seventh Street. Brock & Co. was founded by George A. Brock in 1903. George C. Brock, George A.'s son, took charge of the company, and it continued to grow and thrive. A second store was opened on Wilshire Boulevard, in the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. Tiffany and Co. even approached Brock's to do a merger to become Tiffany-Brock & Co. That merger did not take place, and Angelenos continued to buy their jewelry, watches, silver, fine china, and crystal at Brock & Co. Brock retired in 1964 and the building and inventory were sold. This vase had a note attached upon purchase that attributed it to Clemens Friedell...
