Edmund D. Kinzinger was the Chairman of the Art Department at Baylor University from 1935 to 1950. Previously, Kinzinger was the Director of the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in Munich. Kinzinger left Germany in 1933 because he did not agree with the Nazi government. Kinzinger’s early work in Germany was influenced by Theosophy: a philosophy based on mystical insight into the nature of God. This guided Kinzinger’s art away from representation and towards abstraction. Later, Kinzinger assimilated German Expressionism, French Cubism, and Italian Futurism with his own continuing sense of the mystery of life. While his work incorporated the formal qualities of cubism, there was always a mystical moodiness just below the surface.

Valton Tyler was born in 1944 in Texas, where "the industrial world of oil refineries made a long-lasting impression on Valton as a very young child living in Texas City. He was three years old when the terrible explosion occurred there and can remember the terrifying confusion and 'the beautiful red sky and objects flying everywhere in the air.'" (Reynolds, p. 25) While growing up in Texas City, Valton's father worked in auto repair, and was known for his skill in mixing colors for paint jobs. After leaving Texas City, Valton made his way to Dallas, where he briefly enrolled at the Dallas Art Institute, but found it to be too social and commercial for his taste. After Valton's work was introduced to Donald Vogel (founder of Valley House Gallery), "Vogel arranged for Tyler to use the printmaking facilities in the art department of the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where the young artist essentially taught himself several demanding printmaking techniques. 'It was remarkable,' Vogel says. 'Not only did he learn complicated etching methods, but he was able to express himself powerfully in whatever medium he explored.' Vogel became the publisher of Tyler's prints. Among them, the artist made editions of some 50 different images whose sometimes stringy abstract forms and more solid, architecturally arresting elements became the precursors of his later, mature style." Reflections on Eagle Nest Lake
"My first trip to Eagle Nest Lake was over 30 years ago. I was captivated by mists rising over the lake and flowing along the floor of the valley. With a background in theater, the unfolding light events immediately commanded my attention. The first photographs were made and I was hooked on Eagle Nest Lake and the opportunities it presented for photography. It has become my custom during an annual August visit to Taos, to begin the day with a drive to Eagle Nest Lake through Taos Canyon and over the pass descending into Moreno Valley. The first glimpse of the valley through the trees reveals the atmospheric conditions for the morning. The valley is 8,300 feet above sea level. This high elevation produces crisp cool mornings with mists often filling the valley.
Early on I had no idea that I would be committed to this ethereal place for such a long time. During those first visits, cattle were grazing around the lake and the owners of a ranching operation had allowed lake access for fishermen. I learned later that the lake was formed by a dam built by two ranchers in the early 20th century to impound water of the Cimarron River for irrigation. This created a two thousand acre lake named for the eagles nesting in the area. The lake was stocked and fishermen arrived. The Eagle Nest...
