About the Item
Made in France in 1960 by the futurist fashion designer Pierre Cardin (1922-2020), this "Creation Paris" (all capitals including brand) couture pair of supple kidskin leather black gloves are symmetrically decorated in his early bubble motif with overlapping and topstitched red patent-leather circle appliques, plus red leather wrist piping. With signed ecru silk lining, they are ideal for outdoor wear, such as driving in a convertible car in cool weather. Prior to designing his trademark namesake-monogram logo that he extensively licensed for mass production in subsequent decades (including fabrics and trim-patterns for cars by American Motors), he created this pair to accompany a couture coat and/or boots with similar adornment. His circle fetish emerged around the time of his famous 1954 collection of "Bubble Dresses", which he echoed for the architectural commission of his unique French home near Cannes nicknamed the "Bubble Palace". The 7-1/4-inch-long women's gloves, without a printed size since they are couture, fasten with a red snap at the wrist.
When he was a toddler, Cardin's Italian family emigrated to France, where he became an expert tailor before moving to Paris in 1945. After working for progressive female-led Parisian couture houses Jeanne Paquin and Elsa Schiaparelli, he notably contributed to Christian Dior's legendary "New Look" that debuted in 1947, which included Cardin's sculptural "Bar Suit" according to a New York Times article published in 1958. In 1950 he founded his own Parisian fashion house, whereafter in 1953 he debuted his first haute-couture collection and in 1954 his first boutique.
We date these gloves to 1960 and made in France for two reasons: A museum-collected Cardin ensemble acquired by TheMet includes 1960-dated black leather tall boots decorated with multiple large circular silver-metal discs, while the interiors of the pair bear the same printed all-caps signature "Creation Pierre Cardin Paris". So this seems to have emerged as a signature for couture accessories that were designed by Cardin to be crafted by a French leather-specialized tailor of shoes and gloves. Confirming French production, the custom-colored red round metal snaps bear the signature on the interior silver studs of the Grenoble company A. Raymond, which developed fastening innovations for the textile and auto industries like these progressive machine-attached press studs.
If you may seek a complementary brooch from the same period, please view our other listing for a 1960s Scandinavian sterling silver geometric pin featuring a round red poured glass cabochon.

View All1930s JeanneLavinParis ArtDeco Tulle Silk CoutureAdaptation Black Evening Jacket
By Jeanne Lanvin
Located in Chicago, IL
In the 1930s when French fashion couturier Jeanne Lanvin (1867-1946) was creating decorative bias-cut silk tulle overlays for her feminine full-skirted sleeveless "robes de style", she designed this black semi-transparent silk-tulle formal jacket featuring diagonally-striped topstitched silk-crepe appliques throughout the bias-cut panels. This sheer geometric-patterned cape-like jacket has a skirt that drapes from an open waistline and a top-fastening bodice with gathered rounded 3/4-length sleeves that each have two arm seams and shirred embroidered cuffs. It could have been the first "swing coat" design that was given that name around 1935, when Lanvin was the "uncontested leader in the haute-couture field"--according to the French Palais Galliera that has collected and exhibited similar garments at its fashion museum in Paris. In New York, TheMet collected a House of Lanvin black evening coat with a similar shape that also features dramatic linear appliques, but in a white starburst that it dates to Spring/Summer 1927.
The unprecedented modern look of this Art-Deco women's jacket, which was inspired by 18th-Century French and Spanish topcoats for aristocratic court dresses, may have been good cause for Maison Lanvin to custom-make some close reproductions of a one-of-a-kind couture original for additional clients in Paris, which is implied by the remaining French brand-label noting "Adaptation Jean Lanvin...
