Couture 1980s Castelbajac TuxedoSequin BiasCut Cashmere AsymmetricOversized Knit
About the Item
Uniquely designed as couture by French Jean Charles de Castelbajac in the 1980s, this oversized soft cashmere-viscose-wool bias-cut Italian-knit black sweater with made-in-France tuxedo-like hand-sewn sequin trim is a pullover with V-shaped rolled hems that extend to thigh length and a ribbed neckline that can be zipped at an angle into a turtleneck, if not left entirely open to reveal the left collarbone. The asymmetrically constructed fine knit features shiny black-sequined wide trim in front of the slightly V-shaped seams of the shorter left-side torso that is waist length.
The draping side trim meets the angled neck zipper at the left raglan-sleeve seam, then loops around the bottom of the ribbed standing collar. The sequined trim ends where an apple motif drapes over the left shoulder like a wrapped narrow scarf to partly conceal the zipper. Enabling the sparkly sequins to otherwise dangle down the back, the cartoonish colorful apple is generously double-sided with red, green and copper sequins representing fruit, leaves and stem. Notably, Castelbajac depicted apples in multiple collections over decades.
The large high-quality sequins remain in excellent condition with no pulled threads or missing pieces. After shipping, the buyer may need to realign sequins in one direction as they can flip if the knit is folded. We did so upon acquiring it, which did not loosen any of the expertly-sewn sequins.
The "JC de Castelbajac" labeled sweater can be worn by a wide variety of adult sizes with female French-size 44 intended to be the max. With the zipper closed, the length from the top of the turtleneck to the point of a V-shaped sleeve is 36 inches. Comparatively, 30 inches is the length from the front center of the turtleneck to the center of the draped asymmetrical V-shaped hem. Notably, unzipping the collar so that it folds over does not distort the hemline. While the raglan sleeves negate shoulder seams, the right underarm seam to the hem of this longer side measures 18 inches, which is why the long-short hem that differs by 12 inches can suit a U.S.-size 2 to 12. A small-sized buyer will have sleeves that are longer then usual only where they end in a point.

By Maison Martin Margiela

When Belgian former fashion designer Martin Margiela debuted gold Lurex knits while French Hermes womenswear artistic director, simultaneously in Fall 1999, he introduced at his eponymous Paris-based Maison Martin Margiela a collection featuring 1970s-inspired Lurex-accented sweaters, along with oversized loose clothes intended for either women or men. Including a distinct black-printed white-folded tag stitched into a seam by Italian experimental knitter Miss Deanna, who created many memorable knits under Margiela's artistic direction, this Margiela sparkly finely-knit viscose-and-Lurex-blend long-sleeve pullover is a minimalist unisex design with narrow ribbed trim at the crewneck, wrists and hem. Its "Made In Italy" size 44 with a 15.5-inch shoulderline is without darts and drapes like a one-size-fits-most stretch T-shirt.
The lightweight sweater was knit from pale-gold, grey and blue yarns into an ombre pattern like a dip-dye technique associated with fabric. Yet the additional glittery orange-tone metallic thread (difficult to photograph due to reflections) interspersed throughout was clearly not dyed or printed. Conversely, Margiela's Fall 1999 Artisanale Line 0 collection that was produced instead by his Parisian team explored the textural effects of hand-painting fabrics, such as the unisex T-shirts that were striped or obscured with thick silver paint.
Earlier in the 1990s, Margiela had reproduced some vintage...

CommeDesGarcons 1999 RunwayLook12 BiasCut TranslucentSatin SalmonPink Maxi Dress
By Comme des Garçons, Rei Kawakubo Comme Des Garcons
Located in Chicago, IL
In an atypical Japanese-dye color for Rei Kawakubo, in 1999 she designed this translucent salmon-pink bias-cut satin sleeveless maxi dress evening gown for her brand Comme des Garcons, which debuted on a model walking the Paris runway that Fall as "Look 12" among the Vogue photo-coverage of her Spring/Summer 2000 collection.
The unusual V-neck shape creates a central drape in the front of the unlined dress that prevents the synthetic semi-transparent fabric from clinging to the torso, while still enabling the widening lower part to swoosh while walking.
With the exception of the brand tag, all others were removed by the sole owner to eliminate bulk and visibility through the dress. If the buyer would prefer, the fabric can be made shinier and completely smooth with professional pressing.
Please notice that In a couple of our photos the white drapery next to or below the dress was converted by 1stDibs auto-editing to appear like trailing elements, where there are none. Also, as we used a backless mannequin for our photos, the rear side of the dress at the top is draping inward--not outward.
We have other textural colorful items with over-dyed unique appliques from this same Spring/Summer 2000 collection if the buyer may want to layer pieces for a look similar to the fashion show. This is such a beautiful minimal dress...

StellaMcCartney 2003 SilkSatin Print OffShoulder Disco MiniDress or BomberJacket
By Stella McCartney
Located in Chicago, IL
Arguable the most significant design in the Stella McCartney Spring/Summer 2003 collection since it debuted in several colors on the runway and was worn by the British designer to take her fashion-show bow, this pink-printed dark-grey silk-blend zip-front mini-dress with white satin stripes and pink piping was a favorite of the Vogue critic and her father Beatles co-founder Paul McCarthy.
Vogue wrote: "Her hippest new idea came in the form of puffy satin bombers--she transformed one, a fusion of sport and chinoiserie print, into an off-the-shoulder bubble dress. McCartney is so into the glam-bomber idea, in fact, that she bounded onto the runway wearing a black version herself."
The garment's voluminous batwing sleeves and stretch-cotton ribbed neckline and hem, plus custom golden-charm two-way zipper, enable it to have two different necklines and lengths to convert to a shorter puffier bomber jacket.
Notably, the versatile piece that is subtly printed with mock-Beatles lyrics seems to have been the first tribute fashion-design that McCartney created to reference her father. Prior, she had credited her stylish mother Linda for instilling her with a love of fashion and inspiration for her initial namesake collections, which followed her first commercial collections with Phoebe Philo for Chloe.
For background, when McCartney was a young girl in 1978, the mock-rock band The Rutles parodied a Beatles song, which was recorded by EMI as "Ging, Gang, Goolie". Given its lyrics, the chinoiserie-style dragon motifs were substituted by McCartney with bird skeletons...
