1910s Edwardian White Crochet and Lace Coat Dress

About the Item

This intricately hand crafted full-length jacket dates back to the late Edwardian era of the 1910s. This piece is a wonderful example of crochet and one of the best Circa has ever had in the collection. Derived from the French word for hook, crochet dates back to the early 19th century but gained renewed popularity during the 1910s and 1920s when more and more elaborate techniques were developed. This jacket has an elongated silhouette and falls to around ankle length, a decadent cover-up atop a vintage silk slip, modern resort wear or for a bride. The crochet is white and incredibly detailed with geometric shapes, spirals, florals and many different stitches discernible among the elaborate patterns of the cloth. The hemlines follow the swirling lines and patterns in the crochet. The front of this jacket is secured down the front by tiny tonal buttons which are a modern replacement and fabric loops. This wonderfully preserved piece of history would make a beautiful addition to an antique clothing collection and is a rare, wearable size. In great vintage condition, particularly for a piece of over 100 years of age. There may be one of two breaks in the crochet but we have been over it carefully and nothing shouts out. As an expertly handmade piece, is unlabelled so please check the measurements below carefully. The fabric has no stretch. We believe this would fit a range of sizes up to a UK 10-12, US 6-8.
