About the Item

Late 19th Century woman's mantle cloak or Chyrpy with the artistic hallmarks of the Tekke tribe of Turkmenistan. Though the cloak appears to have sleeves, it is actually intended to drape from the head with the sleeve style tassels hanging in the back. The cloak is primarily made from pieced silk textiles with intricate stitching that creates traditional patterns including a stylized flower and geometric shapes. The hem is decorated with heavy silk fringe and the interior is lined in contrasting printed cotton fabrics. It is a beautiful piece of textile art worthy of display or drape it on the shoulders as shown in the photographs. This special piece is from the estate and private collection of Peggy Slappey, a well traveled lady who passionately collected textile art from Central Asia. Additional items from Ms. Slappey's collection are available on the Modern & Moore homepage including Ikat robes and hats. CONDITION The cloak is in remarkably good condition considering the age though there is wear to the fabric including a tear shown in photograph 17 and an open seam on one of the faux sleeves shown in photograph 18. The fabric integrity is good and it would be safe to display or wear the cloak. MEASUREMENTS The color of the cloak indicates that it would have been worn by a young woman and the cut of the intended drape is narrow for a small frame such as a size 2 or 4. The following measurements are provided as a guideline and were taken with the cloak held closed as seen in photograph 1. For visual reference, the mannequin in the photographs is a size 4.
