About the Item

This is a "cocoon" coat from the early 1920s, encrusted with absolutely incredible hand embroidery. It is made of a black twill ground, with polychrome silk embroidery worked in beautiful paisley patterns. In many places, a red silk ground has been laid over top of the black, and the embroidery has been worked over top of the red for an added pop of colour. The placement of the embroidery, especially on the back of the collar, suggests that this coat may have been re-cut from an earlier garment or textile, most likley imported from India. Already by the turn of the 18th century the Western market had been importing and re-using woven, printed, and embroidered textiles of Asian design, and this practice only gained in popularity throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. By the turn of the 20th century, the Western market was saturated with original Chinese, Indian, and Turkish textiles, as well as with Western-made knock-offs. The skillful craftsmanship and beauty of real Asian embroidery, enhanced by the Orientalist style so popular during the 1910s, made imported pieces highly desirable, and older textiles - for instance, embroidered robes, large blankets, silk sarees, and paisley shawls - were frequently re-cut to become Western-style clothing. [new paragraph] This coat is made in the cocoon style, which became popular during the 1910s through the designs of Paul Poiret and others, and retained its popularity into the 1920s. Often ornamented with large brooches, as in this example, or huge tassels and fringes, these coats accented the drop-waisted styles of the twenties and complemented the penchant for over-the-top luxury which characterized the exuberant post-WWI Jazz Age. Picture this coat with a silk dress with a trailing train, jewel-encrusted heels, a finger-waved bob with a curling ostrich plume, a pair of satin opera gloves, and the perfect lavalier necklace. Whether you go for the whole Roaring Twenties look or a more refined modern style, this coat will always be the most stunning garment in the room. Exquisite hand embroidered paisleys cover this fantastic piece from head to toe. The shawl is most likely from India and dates to the early part of the 20th century. The cloak closes in the front with a jeweled and hand enameled Etruscan revival Victorian clasp. Cloak is unlined however the silk embroidery and fine wool is very soft and luxurious on the skin.
