About the Item

Circa 1955-1960 Spain Black silk faille evening coat by Pedro Rodriguez, a famous Spanish couturier, dating from the late 1950s. A full, flared coat with a remarkable cut at the back, in keeping with the work of famous couturiers of the same period, including Cristobal Balenciaga and Yves Saint Laurent. Skilful assembly of sleeves with oval yokes at the shoulders and large flaps for the sleeves tipped back. The collar is darted at the top and flat-pleated at the shoulders. No lining and label indicating Pedro Rodriguez Madrid Barcelona S. Sebastian. No flaws, black silk with a nice hold that allows for puffy effects. No holes or stains. Good condition in terms of colour and conservation. Dimensions: French size 42-44. Height 116 cm, shoulders 36 cm, sleeves 37-40 cm, chest 110 cm, waist 105 cm, amplitude at the bottom of the coat 158 cm. Pedro Rodríguez opened his fashion house in Barcelona in 1919. He was the first in Spain to follow the guidelines of the professional haute couture association in Paris: to present complete collections on live mannequins in their own elegantly decorated showrooms, made entirely in their own workshops. In 1940, he was one of the instigators of the Barcelona haute couture cooperative and held the position of president until his death. He was also one of the people responsible for promoting Spanish fashion around the world in the years that followed

In 1934 he launched the first ready-to-wear collection under the label "Edition". Installed at 16 avenue Matignon in Paris, he created in 1925 the "kinetic" silhouette, i.e. a supple, modern, dynamic line. He was the first to imagine, a decade later, the luxury ready-to-wear and to think of the unity of a production from clothing to accessories and perfumes, considering fashion as much in its aesthetic dimension, as in its industrial and commercial dimension. That same year, he made his first trip to the United States. President of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture from 1937 to 1945, he trained Christian Dior, Robert Piguet...
