France
Coat dress or frock coat in embroidered black wool by the Maison Paquin directed by Antonio Del Castillo. Fitted cut with long sleeves and V-neck with turned-down panels. Precious Orientalist embroidery on the bust, flaring out from the waist to emphasize the hips. The design, featuring Indian flowers, birds of paradise and a large, stylized peacock, adorns the bust in a rich embroidery of iridescent sequins and silver trims on fuchsia and green velvet appliqué. Cream woven label with black letters indicating Paquin, 3 Rue de la Paix Paris, handwritten number on back 60447. Black faille lining at bustier level. No flaws to speak of apart from a few very rare missing sequins. Very good colour and condition. Dimensions: Equivalent to size 38 France. Height 143 cm, shoulders 39 cm, bust 92 cm, waist 69 cm, sleeves 60 cm, hips 99 cm
Jeanne Paquin (1869-1936) was the founder of one of France's oldest haute couture houses, with branches in London, New York, Madrid and Buenos Aires. President of the Chambre syndicale de la couture from 1917 to 1919, Jeanne Paquin retired in 1920, leaving the management of the house to Henri Joire and artistic direction to Madeleine Wallis. Ana de Pombo replaced her in 1936, the year Jeanne Paquin died, before handing over to Antonio Canovas del Castillo in 1942. The management of the house was then passed to Colette Massignac, and then to Lou Claverie, who were able to adapt the style of the collections to the New-Look fashioned by Christian Dior. In 1956, the house of Paquin, experiencing serious financial difficulties, ceased trading
