An Early Indian Kashmir Kani weave shawl - East India Companies Circa 1810

About the Item

Circa 1810/1820 India for export to Europe A rare Kani hand-woven Indian Kashmir shawl with cream pashmina reserve dating from the beginning of the shawl fashion in France around 1810. Kani shawl woven in six colours using tapestry point stitch by crocheting wefts with particularly dense decoration. It is woven in one piece, meaning that the borders and fringes are not added but woven in one piece. A classic eight boteh arrangement at each end with a Thousand Flowers motif. Four spandrels in the corners and an overgallery of inclined rows of boteh. In one corner, there is an illegible customs or export stamp, probably Russian. Huge ivory reserve of the best pashmina made from Tibetan goat wool. A few moth holes in the reserve and some weaknesses on the side borders which have been strengthened in a few places. Otherwise clean, with no stains or major defects. Good overall condition in terms of colour and conservation. Dimensions: 300 cm X 132 cm plus 6 cm of fringes.
