About the Item

A black trench is both seductive and classic. This beautiful version by Martin Grant has subtle femininity and embodies a WWD article that calls his work “…perfect fare for an Audrey Hepburn type,” (8 Oct 2004). Indeed, the Australian born designer manages to combine a brushed canvas with topstitched seams for a rare blend of soft, structural and sleek. The single breasted center front opening features covered buttons and a topstitched belt with slip buckle for cinching the waist. The side slit pockets are cleverly constructed to sit outside of the jacket, added variety to this sophisticated archetype. Sleeves bell softly from the forearm, where they are articulated with an adjustable buckled band. This bell is echoed in the gentle a-line skirt. Both the rounded collar and sleeve hems have three rows of topstitching before terminating with self-fabric edging. Lined in an olive green silky nylon. In a 2015 New York Times T Magazine, the incomparably stylish Lee Radziwill describes, “For me, his talent lies in making coats and jackets that never feel trendy because he understands and respects line, proportion and simplicity” (25 March 2015). Made from black brushed cotton, the single breasted coat features topstitched seams and details. The overall silhouette has a slim fit through the bodice, and gentle a-line skirt. Sleeves bell softly from the forearm, where they are articulated with a slip-fit adjustable buckle band. The waistline has belt loops at sides and center back, with a black belt with slip-fit buckle that can be cinched at the waist. Side slit pockets are constructed to the exterior of the jacket, providing variety to the standard trench. A rounded collar and sleeve hems have three rows of topstitched before terminating with self-fabric edging.
