About the Item

It’s easy to see why tea dresses such as this were sometimes called “pneumonia dresses”: their weightlessness provided little coverage and even less warmth (though the pounds of undergarments certainly compensated for both). Replete with the ornamentation for which Victorian and Edwardian garments were famous, this one would also make an unforgettable wedding dress (provided the bride is a size 000!). White net half-sleeve tea dress with wide, round neckline and self ruffles at sleeve edges, shoulders and hem; overlaid in scalloped lace from bust to mid-shin. Pink rosebuds around full bust circumference, at elbows and around hips, plus barely-visible double row of pink satin ribbon around interior of bodice at bust line. Snapping rear closure from right rear neck to derrière with two hooks and eyes at rear waist; interior waistline reinforced with 2 ½” of grosgrain ribbon but dress unlined. fabric: net, lace, grosgrain ribbon noteworthy: dry clean only alterations: none condition: very good with age-appropriate fading and wear to rosebuds and extremely light surface wear measurements: neckline opening: 8” across shoulders: 12” sleeve length: 9” from shoulder, 7 ½” from underarm sleeve circumference: 12” at upper arm, 9” at elbow bust: 32” max waist: 24” bodice length: 13” from shoulder, 7” from underarm to lowest waist seam hips: 32” (net underdress), 40” (lace overlayer) skirt length: 38” total length: 51” from shoulder, 45 ½” from underarm sweep: 100” label: no label present size: no size tag present; comparable to modern size extra extra small
