About the Item
Striking black cocktail dress created by Hollywood costume designer Gilbert Adrian which exemplifies his unique use of sharp structure and ornamentation. This dress dates to the 1940's.
The bodice of the dress is made from crisp black silk taffeta, featuring a draped neckline and wide, angular cap sleeves, a hallmark of Adrian's silhouettes. Clusters of hand-applied black glass beads and tassels form stylized floral motifs. The embellishments continue onto the high-waisted, mid-calf length crepe skirt, which falls in gentle pleats, balancing the architectural strong shouldered bodice. A matching crepe belt cinches the waist, creating a flattering defined fit. This piece is a quintessential example of Adrian’s couture work, showcasing his use of sculptural silhouettes and elaborate detailing. The hand finishing is exquisite. Not to be missed!
Dress best fits a size 2 or 4. Approximate measurements: bust 36" fully extended but drapes so best for a slightly smaller bust", waist just over 24" , hips 36" but can extend due to the inverted peat and overall length 48".
Adrian original label. Originally sold at Julius Garfinckels & Co in Washington DC as indicated by the label.
The condition is good (although excellent for the age of the piece). There is a tiny bit of wear at the edges of the silk taffeta and tassels as shown.

- Condition:Wear consistent with age and use. Dress presents well. There are no glaring imperfections however there's some light wear to the tassels & a couple areas of taffeta including a tiny area of repair at shoulder. Given the rarity & beauty of this piece, these tiny flaws can be forgiven.
