About the Item

This gorgeous vintage Jean Louis dress has a red chiffon lined bodice with unlined sheer full cuffed sleeves, and a full pleated red and gray striped taffeta skirt. The dress has its original red fabric belt , which is stamped with Jean Louis, and the dress snaps and has a hook and eye on the inside of the waist with fabric covered buttons up the front of the bodice. This gorgeous dress was designed by Jean Louis Berthault in the 1960's and it is stunning in person! Jean Louis Berthault is perhaps best remembered for the dress he designed for Marilyn Monroe when she sang "Happy Birthday Mr. President" to John F. Kennedy in 1962. This dress is one of several pieces we are selling from a prominent Portland, Oregon family that had a long history in the fashion business. The other pieces from their collection were all designed by Norman Norell and this one is the only one made by another designer. We estimate this dress to be a modern day US size 6/8, but please review the measurements for the best fit. The dress is tea length but has a 4 inch hem that could be let out if you'd prefer a full length gown. Their daughters/granddaughters provided this very interesting small glimpse into their family's fashion history! The Meier, Schwartz & Sadowsky Families were prominent members of the fashion industry for 150 years. Reuben Sadowsky was a prominent real estate and garment tycoon in the 19th century, having erected the Sadowsky Building at 1372 Broadway in Manhattan, the first manufacturing site in “Garment Town”. Many of the Norman Norell pieces that we are listing on 1stdibs were originally designed for Reuben’s only daughter, Betty Sadowsky Schwartz of New York. Betty Sadowsky married Harry Schwartz, who owned National Department Stores. Harry Schwartz was a close college friend of Oscar Hammerstein (Rogers & Hammerstein), and Harry was even in Hammerstein’s wedding. So, Betty and Harry Schwartz would often attend openings of the Rogers & Hammerstein plays. Betty's granddaughters told us that several of the evening gowns we have from her estate were worn at events hosted by Rogers & Hammerstein. Because Betty’s husband owned National Department Stores, the Schwartz family would regularly visit their stores around the country. Among the stores in the National Department Store chain was Lipman Wolfe & Company, which was located in the building across from Meier & Frank’s flagship store in Portland, Oregon. On one of the Schwartz’s visits to Portland, they brought their daughter, who met ,fell in love with, and eventually married, a descendant of the Meier & Frank Company. Meier & Frank was a prominent chain of department stores founded in Portland and later bought by the May Department Stores Company (Macy’s). Meier & Frank operated in the Pacific Northwest from 1857 to 2006. Their daughters, and Betty's granddaughters are the women who parted with this Jean Louis dress and the beautiful Norell pieces that belonged to their mother and grandmother.
