Maria Monaci Gallenga Velvet Evening Jacket, 1920s
About the Item
Maria Monaci Gallenga 1920s ice blue silk velvet evening jacket. Overall stencilling with a scrolling medieval foliate motif in silver and gold. Ruched velvet collar with long ties. Hallmark gilt and silk passementerie tassels with handmade Murano glass beads.
Lined in silk crepe, Gallenga's signature metallic stenciling never tarnished or flaked because it was applied with a special method devised by her husband, a professor at the University of Rome. with detailed Gothic and Medieval motifs, she would use up to nine tones of gold and silver in these motifs.
