About the Item
A beautiful early to mid 20th Century quilted silk woman's robe from the Mazar-i-Sharif region of Northern Afghanistan, Central Asia. The robe is in a traditional Ikat pattern displaying shades of purple, aubergine, magenta, peacock blue, pale yellow and pale lilac pink. It is lined in a complimentary cotton gingham with striped banding. There is an unexpected web of coral red stitching under each arm that cinches the fit and is a characteristic of a woman's robe as compared to a man's robe. This special piece is from the estate and private collection of Peggy Slappey, a well traveled lady who passionately collected textile art from Central Asia. This robe was part of a 2016 exhibit at the Birmingham Museum of Art which displayed textiles from Ms. Slappey's extensive collection. The robe is pictured on page 41 of the catalog and is included. Additional items from Ms. Slappey's collection are available on the Modern & Moore homepage including Ikat robes and hats.

Late 19th Century woman's mantle cloak or Chyrpy with the artistic hallmarks of the Tekke tribe of Turkmenistan. Though the cloak appears to have sleeves, it is actually intended to drape from the head with the sleeve style tassels hanging in the back. The cloak is primarily made from pieced silk textiles with intricate stitching that creates traditional patterns including a stylized flower and geometric shapes. The hem is decorated with heavy silk fringe and the interior is lined in contrasting printed cotton fabrics. 20th century Uzbek cotton and silk ikat chapan robe
Uzbekistan, 20th Century
Height 122cm, width 153cm
Historically, an ikat chapan robe was a status symbol worn by nomadic tribes and settles in Uzbekistan as well as other Central Asian regions. Paired with belt, tunic, and trousers, the brightness of colours and intricacy of the embroidery were indicators of the wealth of the wearer.
The robe in Mayfair Gallery’s collection is brightly coloured with large, red and yellow geometrical patterns on a cream-coloured base. The inside of the robe is also patterned, with red floral motifs formed in a geometrical and symmetrical pattern.
The outside trim of this silk and cotton ikat chapan robe is elegantly embroidered with white and red patterns. Such embroidery carried symbolic meaning, protecting the wearer from evil spirits. The long sleeves are a beautiful design feature, intending to cover the wearer’s hands and protect them from cold temperatures.
Worn by both men and women, this eye-catching Uzbek robe...
