Original Pioneer Homesteader Prairie Maxi Skirt w Blue Ticking Print – S, 1870s

About the Item

A skirt that has withstood over 150 years on the planet with no loss of color, print or integrity despite having lived through winters on the Plains and washing with lye; front and back hips gently discolored from years of hand-wiping. The decorative self-fabric bands sewn on the diagonal prove that though Pioneer clothes were all about work, they also left room for modest self-expression. Handmade blue and white calico print maxi skirt with lightly gathered waistline and plain, unprinted waistband; two 1 ¾” bands at mid-calf and hem sewn on the diagonal. Five hook and eye closures at rear; unlined. fabric: mid-weight cotton broadcloth noteworthy: may be hand washed in cool water; hang dry or dry clean alterations: none condition: fair with faint yellowing throughout, especially at front and rear hips; one ½” hole at left hip (intentionally left unmended for historical authenticity) measurements: waist: 26” hips: free length: 38” sweep: 81” label: no tag present size: none; comparable to modern size small
