About the Item

Although it bears no label, this suit betrays all the hallmarks of a Schiaparelli master work: saturated color, silk velvet fabric (her favorite), sharp shoulders paired with curving lapels, and most importantly, artisanal beading. Clearly inspired by Schiaparelli's designs, its shape and motif are strikingly similar to her 1938 Zodiac collection, a single piece of which recently sold for over £130,000. Dramatically sculpted peplum jacket with multiple princess seams front and back; scalloped lapel and velvet-covered button closure. Heavily padded shoulders with ornately beaded vines from shoulder to bust; unlined but backed with heavy silk faille for extra body around peplum. Pencil skirt with side metal zipper closure, top hook and eye and rear kick pleat; unlined. fabric: silk velvet, silk faille noteworthy: dry clean only alterations: reinforced all seams and darts condition: very good with minor luster loss to some pearl bead clusters and gentle wear at skirt waistband measurements: •jacket• shoulders: 16” bust: 36” sleeve: 23 ½” from shoulder (including ½” shoulder pad), 16 ½” from underarm sleeve circumference: 13” at underarm, 8 ½” at wrist waist: 29” length: 23” from shoulder (including ½” shoulder pad), 15 ½” from underarm sweep: 40” •skirt• waist: 26” hips: 40” length: 28”, including 1” plain waistband kick pleat: 2” opening sweep: 38” (pleat closed) hem: 3” label: no label present size: no size tag present; comparable to modern size small
