About the Item
Circa 1840-1850
Provence
Beautiful Provençal quilt made from french printed cotton patchwork between 1790 and 1840, dating from the end of the french Romantic period. Commonly known as ‘Grandma's garden’, the seven hexagon motifs form a flower highlighted by a row of white cotton hexagons. The border is a frieze printed in block printing on an madder red background, probably from the Steiner manufactory in Alsace, dating from the same period. The chintz are printed with very small motifs called mignonettes and miniature stripes including the famous provence batons rompus. The front stitching on this very light quilt is only visible on the reverse, which is entirely in white cotton (a few stains and soiling on the reverse). There are a few rust spots and micro-stains, otherwise no holes or major defects. Very good colour and condition.
