About the Item

A beautifully hand stitched and sewn handbag with a charming antique rustic scene with two figures by master craftsmen and luxury good manufacturer Morabito. executed in silk, in fine and varied stitching, some in slight relief, and some in delicate cross stitch, when describing varying textures of the landscape and objects. A beautiful cabuchon 'faux' moonstone acts as a clasp. Dating from the late 1940s, this stylised cartoon is highly characteristic of trends in accessories of this time, and these have now become collector's items. There are some slight signs of wear, on the top edge and corners, and on the handle. But this handbag is on overall good vintage condition, exuding a unique charm and quality. Morabito is a French luxury brand founded in 1905 in Nice by Jean-Baptiste Morabito, and still operating in Paris today. The workmanship and design were always of the very highest quality and standard, on a par with Hermes, often in exotic skins, with unusual clasps and fittings. Marilyn Monroe and Maria Callas were amongst the celebrities for whom special bags were created. The current shop is in Rue Saint-Honore, Paris.

A real collector's piece, and conversation point, this highly imaginative and charming handbag design is a rarity, and is wonderful to use and wear. The centre of the 'rose' pulls to one side, releasing the catch, hence allowing the bag to open. The top is made from delicately hand curled 'petals' of coloured celluloid, the actual frame in dark green is robust and strong, with stronger green leaves, underlying the 'bloom'.
